There is a difference between releasing a buggy or unoptimized game and lying about features that are not present on release, or features that were never even planned by the developers yet were promised (which still are not in the game and never will be).

A poor launch due to bugs is something that's sadly common nowadays. But this could be remedied by fixing the bugs, firing the QAs responsible etc.

But intentionally lying about features to sell as many copies as possible is nothing more than fraud and should be treated as a CRIME. Defrauding millions of dollars otherwise implies serious legal punishment. Just look up the sheer amount of money this game pulled at launch and tell me again that they shouldn't answer for it.

Now, people pull out the "but look how they made the game better card" as soon as someone mentions the hundreds of millions of dollars stolen by the fraudulent advertising. There are many ways to look at this.

Take a look at what the options would've been if you had been a Hello Games developer at that time. If you quit, your career would've been tarnished forever and it's questionable whether anybody would've hired you after that. The other choice was to stay, put on a sad face and say we will work on the game. Surprise surprise, the sheep ate that story up like hotcakes and look how the wider gaming masses praise them today. The vast majority of them are uninformed and do not realize the scope of Hello Games's crimes.

But let's imagine this scenario. If those responsible did in fact face legal punishment for what they had done, the studio would either fail (the more likely case here) or they would still try and find a way to make the game work. Let's assume that the studio went on to work on the game, and pushed it to where it is today. On the one hand, it's a commendable endeavor and a step in the right direction. But still, the question as to why it wasn't like this at launch would always linger. Also, why did it take 10 years to get it to a reasonable spot?

Just reading through some of Murray's comments since the game released really does not make me have any better an opinion of him. Lots of blame placed on "miscommunication", his hating speaking with the press, his "naivete". And of course, the constant mentions of death threats to deflect. To me he's shown very little remorse.

Whether you forgive them for lying based on their actions since is your choice. My position here is that Sean willingly lied to get his initial success, and that's completely on him. And this should've been legally prosecuted.

The only way for them to get out of it WAS to continue working and improving the game. But that doesn't matter since the scope of their fraud is simply irredeemable.

Sure, some folks have forgiven them for continuing to add to the game. Personally though, this comes from either not understanding the scope of their fraud, or intentionally not caring because they like the current state the game is in.

You’re comparing a kid fucking up a batch of cookies to a multimillion-dollar commercial product that was aggressively and fraudulently marketed around features that either didn’t exist, didn’t work as advertised, or were outright misrepresented before release.

A bad first attempt at baking isn’t comparable to repeatedly making public claims about a product, selling millions of copies based on those claims, and then releasing something drastically different from what people were led to believe they were buying.

They earned over 150 MILLION DOLARS at launch. Politicians get way worse shit for less and regular calls for solid legal punishment. The same should apply to Hello Games.

This kind of naive thinking is exactly why they managed to get away with the biggest fraud event in gaming history, and are being lauded as heroes today.

Had they faced legal punishment which was more than merited, you could argue they could be given a second chance and start anew fairly.

Somehow people find this as some kind of fringe take, and that's most likely people that just aren't informed on what they had done. Look up how much money they stole off of their lies, for starters.

The narrative that they somehow felt bad for the people that bought the game and decided to make it right by focusing on developing the game for years after which lead to their "redemption" is fucking retarded. They had no other choice than to try and pull it out of the gutter, because the career of all of the ones involved would've been doomed forever had they not.
