A months-long Sky News investigation into the US double-tap strike on a Minab girls' school found the Pentagon had tracked the site by satellite since 1987 and could still count children's shadows in the courtyard before firing anyway.

What the evidence shows:

Three Tomahawk missiles fired from the USS Spruance, 716 kilometers away in the Arabian Sea, hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab on Feb 28, the opening day of the US-Israeli war on Iran. Witnesses described a second strike hitting the exact spot where a teacher had moved surviving students for shelter, killing nearly everyone who had taken cover there. A third strike followed on the same site. Death tolls range from 156 to over 170, most of them girls aged seven to twelve. The school had been walled off from the adjacent IRGC naval base since at least 2015, had its own website, and was geolocatable through open-source materials any analyst could have pulled in minutes.

Built to fail:

The Pentagon's own machinery for preventing exactly this outcome had already been dismantled. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth slashed the Civilian Protection Center of Excellence workforce by roughly 90 percent and cut CENTCOM's civilian casualty assessment team from ten people to one, months before the war started. A May Pentagon Inspector General report found the office had become a shell on paper with no budget, no mandate, no real mission. A functioning warning system was defunded on purpose, then blamed for not warning anyone.

Accountability buried:

Four months on, CENTCOM's commander told reporters the investigation was near complete, yet nothing has been released. Asked in June whether anyone would face consequences, Trump called it a strange question, adding that mistakes are made and war is nasty. The mistake was choosing not to fund the office that exists to catch mistakes like this one.

My take: A military that surveilled a schoolyard for four decades didn't fail to see the children, it decided in advance that seeing them wouldn't change the targeting. Nobody in this chain lacked information.

When a privatised bank outperforms Pakistan's corporate giants, the argument for reform makes itself.

UBL's H1 2026 results are remarkable — not just by banking standards, but across Pakistan's corporate landscape.

▪ H1 2026 profit after tax: Rs. 85.9 billion
▪ Q2 2026 profit after tax: Rs. 37.5 billion
▪ Strategic investments of up to Rs. 40 billion announced in agriculture, microfinance and higher education

To put this in perspective, UBL's first-quarter profit alone compares favourably with the quarterly profits reported by several of Pakistan's largest listed companies, including OGDCL, Mari Energies, Lucky Cement and Hub Power.

But here is the part worth remembering.

UBL was a government-owned bank, nationalised in 1974. It was privatised in 2002. Twenty-four years later, it is among Pakistan's most profitable listed companies, generating substantial tax revenue for the exchequer, paying regular dividends, and now committing Rs. 40 billion to agriculture, financial inclusion, and higher education.

This is what privatisation looks like when it works — when the sponsor is capable, the regulator is credible, and the entity is allowed to operate commercially. The State Bank's prudential oversight provided the regulatory backbone. The Bestway Group brought management depth and long-term commitment. The result is an enterprise that creates value for shareholders, for the exchequer, and for the broader economy.

In my ongoing ten-part series on SOE Reform and Privatisation in Business Recorder, I have argued that the test of a successful privatisation is whether public fiscal exposure ends and converts into a positive contribution. UBL's H1 2026 results are that test, passed convincingly.

The real measure of success will now be how the Rs. 40 billion in strategic investments translates into productivity, financial inclusion, and sustainable growth.

United Bank Limited (PSX:UBL) delivers another strong quarter. The bank posted Rs95.0 billion in profit after tax for 1HCY26, up 49% YoY, with EPS rising to Rs33.93 from Rs25.69 last year. Growth was driven by resilient net interest income, a sharp increase in non funded income, and a strong treasury performance, while asset quality remained solid with a net credit loss reversal.

On the balance sheet, UBL continued to expand with deposits reaching Rs6.12 trillion (+18% YoY), advances climbing to Rs1.53 trillion (+12% YoY), and investments increasing to Rs11.9 trillion (+20% YoY). Despite higher operating expenses, the bank's revenue growth comfortably absorbed the additional costs, highlighting the strength of its core franchise.

The Board also announced an interim cash dividend of Rs8/share, taking the cumulative payout for 2026 to Rs16/share. Beyond the financials, UBL approved strategic initiatives including an Rs8 billion investment to establish an agriculture technology subsidiary, up to Rs22 billion to strengthen Khushhali Microfinance Bank, and a Rs10 billion commitment towards establishing a university in collaboration with the Bestway Foundation.

Overall, UBL has delivered another impressive set of results, combining strong earnings growth, healthy balance sheet expansion, attractive shareholder returns, and long term strategic investments.
