The principle involved in creating this masterpiece is acoustic resonance through stone vibration. Sound

👉Stone selection
They used dense, hard, resonant stones like granite, black granite, and diabase. Not every stone can sing. The stone must transmit vibration cleanly.

👉Shape tuning
Each small pillar was carved with different length, width, thickness, and mass. These dimensions control the frequency and note produced.

👉Flexural vibration
When struck, the pillar does not visibly move, but internally it vibrates. These tiny bending vibrations produce audible tones.

👉Resonance amplification
The surrounding mandapa or hall acts like an acoustic chamber. The stone, pillar cluster, ceiling, and open space help the sound travel and become clearer.

The artisans were essentially tuning stone by removing tiny amounts of material. Just like a veena string is tuned by tension, these stones and pillars were tuned by geometry and proportion.

Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, Vijaya Vittala Temple, Nellaiappar Temple, and Airavateshwar Temple are marvels of science and art fused on earth.

Our civilisation could create such wonders because we did not see stone as dead matter. We saw Brahman in everything. Even in stone, there was presence, energy, and possibility. That is why our ancestors could make pillars sing and temples speak through sound, space, and proportion.

Our ancestors were scientists, architects, and doctors who gave immense knowledge and creativity to the world, while we barely know enough about them.
