Four Stars of Destiny, a typescript of which has been seen by The Caravan, was supposed to go to press in April 2024. The blurb by its publisher, Penguin Books, provides a fairly anodyne pitch, describing the army chief’s career experiences. “General Naravane shares lessons on leadership and management with universal applicability, and gives us an insider’s perspective on what else needs to be done to make the Armed Forces a more potent instrument of national power, ready to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century,” it states. “Naravane’s life and career illustrate the strength and resilience required to overcome adversity, and the importance of family and maintaining a work-life balance—something that has been lost sight of in today’s 24×7 work culture.” Extracts from the book were published by the Press Trust of India, in December 2023, while advance orders were taken by Amazon and other online retailers. Then, the whole process stalled.

In October 2025, when asked about the matter at the Khushwant Singh Literature Festival, Naravane said that the publishers were still waiting on reviews from the defence ministry. “It is still under review for more than a year now.” I reached out to the publishers, Naravane and the ministry of defence, but received no response.
