From romance to zombies, Showbox emerged as the biggest winner at the Korean box office in the first half of 2026.
Showbox enjoyed an outstanding first half of the year. Not only did it score four consecutive box office hits, but it also demonstrated its dominance by outperforming major international blockbusters in both admissions and revenue.
According to the Korean Film Council's 2026 First Half Korean Film Industry Report released on July 29, total cinema attendance reached 57.05 million by the end of June. Of that figure, Korean films accounted for 37.37 million admissions, representing a 74.9% increase compared to the same period last year. Although the number of Korean films released fell from 111 to 89, total revenue surged by 81.7%, rising from 203.8 billion won to 370.2 billion won.
The first half of 2026 belonged to Showbox. The company achieved four consecutive box office successes with Once We Were Us, The Man Who Lives with the King, Salmokji, and Colony. These films, spanning different genres and themes, helped revitalize a theatrical market that had been struggling in recent years.
Showbox's dominance extended beyond popularity to revenue as well. According to the Korean Box Office Information System, the top three highest grossing films from January to June were all Showbox releases, with The Man Who Lives with the King ranking first, Colony second, and Salmokji third. The Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster Project Hail Mary came in fourth, while Once We Were Us ranked fifth.
The romance film #OnceWeWereUs (#KooKyohwan and #MoonGayoung), was the first of the four hits. Released at the end of last year, it reached its break even point in just 13 days and attracted 2.6 million moviegoers. The film became the first Korean romance movie since Crazy Romance (2019) to surpass 2 million admissions, earning praise for its realistic emotional resonance and lingering impact. During the first half of the year, it generated approximately 24.4 billion won in revenue, securing fifth place at the box office.
The momentum continued with #TheManWhoLivesWithTheKing, a historical drama that depicts life after King Danjong's dethronement. Starring #YooHaejin, #ParkJihoon, and #YooJitae the film received widespread acclaim for its performances, humor, and emotionally moving story. It ultimately drew 16.9 million admissions, becoming the second highest grossing Korean film of all time. The film earned approximately 163.1 billion won and accounted for 28.2% of the box office market share, establishing itself as the biggest theatrical phenomenon of the first half of the year.
The horror film #Salmokji (#KimHyeYoon, #LeeJongWon, #KimJunhan, and #JangDaah) carried the momentum forward. Based on the well known Salmokji urban legend, the film attracted significant public interest and played a key role in revitalizing the Korean horror market. After comfortably surpassing its break even point, it exceeded 3 million admissions, becoming one of the most successful Korean horror films ever made. The film recorded 3.24 million moviegoers, earned approximately 33.3 billion won, and captured 5.8% of the market share. Its popularity was so strong that filming locations became tourist attractions in their own right.
The final entry in Showbox's successful lineup was #Colony, Yeon Sangho's latest zombie film and Jun Jihyun's first big screen project in 11 years. The film stars #JunJihyun, #KooKyohwan, #JiChangWook, #KimShinrok, and #ShinHyunbin, and distinguished itself through its concept of evolving zombies. Although audience reactions were initially divided, strong performances and the film's fresh take on the zombie genre helped it become a major commercial success. Colony ultimately attracted 5.74 million admissions, earned approximately 60.5 billion won, captured 10.5% of the market share, and finished as the second highest grossing film by revenue in the first half of 2026.
Missing Lovely Runner hours ๐ฅน
Ws : When we truly like or love someone, there are moments when we donโt see the food theyโre eating as something dirty, right? While filming that scene, there was actually a lot of debate among the staff as well, with people asking, โCan an action like that really make your heart flutter?โ But personally, I liked that scene too (dumpling scene).
Hy : In Lovely Runner, thereโs a scene where Sol is eating a dumpling and suddenly chokes on it. Because the dumpling is so hot, she instinctively goes, โUhuk,โ and spits it out. At that moment, Sunjae immediately holds out his hand and catches it. A lot of people around me watched that scene and said, โHuh? Why is this considered a heart fluttering moment? Whatโs so special about it?โ But think about it. Other than my father, what man in this world would casually accept food that Iโve already bitten into and spit out into his hand?
At first, even I had trouble explaining why that scene could make peopleโs hearts race. Itโs hard to explain logically by saying, โItโs romantic because of this reason or that reason.โ
I really love how both of them described the dumpling scene as a heart fluttering moment. And honestly, I completely understand why, because it's one of my favorite scenes as well.
At its core, when we truly care about or love someone, we stop looking at everything from a purely logical perspective. That's why Sunjae instinctively holding out his hand feels so romantic.
Lee Si Eun truly has a gift for creating heart fluttering moments in every one of her works. Her most memorable scenes are rarely grand gestures or overly dramatic moments. Instead, she has a talent for turning small, ordinary actions from everyday life into unforgettable romantic scenes that stay with you long after the drama ends.
The dumpling scene is probably one of the best examples of that. On paper, it's such a simple moment. But the way it conveys Sunjae's feelings makes it feel incredibly special, memorable, and enough to make your heart skip a beat๐ฅน #LovelyRunner ๐ซถ
