IGP DISU INAUGURATES MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS AND COACHING WORKSHOP FOR POLICE PERSONNEL IN ABUJA
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, on Wednesday, 28th October 2026, declared open a Mental Health Awareness and Coaching Workshop for officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Abuja. He was represented at the event by the Force Medical Director, AIG Nkechi Eze. The workshop is coordinated by the Department of Training and Development, in partnership with Awesome Valley Consult Ltd and the Directorate of Force Medical Services, to strengthen officers’ emotional resilience, professional judgement and operational effectiveness.
In his remarks, delivered by AIG Nkechi Eze, the IGP outlined his approved policy direction on mental health coaching, emphasising early identification of mental health concerns, timely intervention and appropriate referral for professional care. He noted that the demanding nature of police work requires practical coping skills and accessible support systems that enable officers to seek assistance without fear of stigma. He stressed that recognising signs of stress, burnout and emotional distress in oneself and colleagues is essential to maintaining a healthy workforce and ensuring professional service delivery.
The lead facilitator, Maimuna Ummi Abdullahi, popularly known as Coach Diddi, a Mental Health and Emotional Resilience Coach and Team Lead of Awesome Valley Consult Ltd, highlighted the importance of coaching for officers routinely exposed to high-pressure and potentially traumatic situations. She explained that mental health coaching promotes self-awareness, stress management, emotional resilience, healthy coping strategies, early help-seeking and peer support. She further clarified that coaching complements, rather than replaces, clinical assessment and treatment, helping officers recognise when professional care is necessary.
More than 100 officers drawn from the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), Police Mobile Force (PMF), Special Protection Unit (SPU), Directorate of Force Medical Services, Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Special Intervention Squad (SIS), Special Tactical Squad (STS) and police divisions within the Federal Capital Territory are participating in the workshop. Senior officers present included CP Aina Adesola, CP L. Ibrahim and CP M. Umar.
DIG Isyaku Mohammed, mni, reasserted the Department’s commitment to sustained, practical and needs-based training in collaboration with the Directorate of Force Medical Services to deepen mental health awareness and connect personnel with appropriate support.
The Inspector-General of Police reiterated that personnel welfare remains central to the Force’s commitment to professionalism and effective service delivery, emphasising that officers must be physically fit, mentally resilient and adequately supported to discharge their duties effectively. He urged all personnel to prioritise their mental health, seek assistance early and support colleagues experiencing emotional or psychological difficulties, while upholding the highest standards of discipline, sound judgement and respect for the public.

INTERPOL knows the value of strong partnerships and collective response. This year’s Global Security Forum in Doha was focused on alliances - a theme that could not be more timely.
The threats that surround us in cybercrime, fraud, narcotics and more, are most dangerous when they can easily exploit weaknesses in global systems. Bringing stability to this environment is not an easy task, but it is much more difficult when we attempt to do it alone.
This important event, held under the auspices of H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, provided an opportunity to reaffirm our partnerships and our shared commitment to global security.
Qatar has long been a key partner in the global fight against crime, particularly through Project Stadia, a pioneer in the field of security of major events.
Events like this one give us the chance to strengthen those bonds in person. I’m confident that discussions with H.E. Abdullah bin Khalaf bin Hattab Al Kaabi, Undersecretary of the @MOI_Qatar, will further strengthen cooperation between INTERPOL and Qatar.
I was also pleased to spend time with our Executive Committee Delegate for Asia, @AMohammedAlAli. Together, we attended Milipol, which consistently showcases the latest technologies dedicated to helping shape a modern law enforcement response.
🇳🇬 A pleasure to welcome Chief of the Nigeria @PoliceNG, Inspector General Olatunji Rilwan Disu to @INTERPOL_HQ.
As one of Africa’s leading contributors of data to INTERPOL’s global systems, Nigeria plays a key role in helping law enforcement detect and disrupt crime across borders.
We discussed how INTERPOL can support Nigeria in addressing major security challenges, including cybercrime, financial crime, terrorism and organized crime networks that increasingly operate across regions and jurisdictions.
Success against these threats depends on cooperation, information sharing and coordinated operational action. I look forward to further strengthening our partnership in the years ahead.
The latest issue of INTERPOL Spotlight is out now 🔦
With 196 member countries, INTERPOL is the voice that speaks on behalf of the global law enforcement community.
This edition of our newsletter highlights how our operational teams, analysts and experts in human trafficking, cybercrime and financial crime have brought the shocking threat of scam centres to the world’s attention.

AND THE MAN DANCED…
For those familiar with literature, particularly novels, drama and poetry, this title may immediately remind them of the celebrated work of the Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, 'The Man Died.'
One may therefore ask: Which one is “And the Man Danced”?
Well, this is not a story of death or mourning. It is a story of celebration, humility, human relations and leadership. It is another opportunity to reflect on the personality and leadership style of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, and his tenure as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
On Saturday, 19 September 2026, in Abuja, the IGP personally graced the wedding reception of one of the officers serving in the IGP Secretariat, ASP Adams Adedotun, who had married his beautiful bride, Zainab. The reception was held at the Nigeria Police Resource Centre, Jabi, Abuja.
Adams was, at one time, my personal assistant when I served as the Force Public Relations Officer in Abuja. He covered briefly for DSP Tana when he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School to pursue his legal career. Adams is a dedicated, brave and intelligent police officer.
On arrival at the reception, I noticed the presence of the IGP’s advance team. I initially assumed it was the usual preparatory deployment for an official engagement, as is customary whenever the IGP is scheduled to attend an event.
But at about 4:45 p.m., the atmosphere changed. The eagle had landed.
The arrival funfair played by the band and the accompanying excitement announced the arrival of the IGP. He came in a relaxed and unassuming manner, ready not merely to make an appearance, but to celebrate with the young couple and members of the police family.
And that is where the story becomes interesting.
As I have consistently observed in my previous writings, leadership is not only demonstrated through policies, directives and official ceremonies. It is often revealed in the seemingly simple moments when a leader chooses to connect with the people.
As the great American leadership thinker John C. Maxwell famously put it, “Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.”
Sometimes, that influence is exercised not from behind a desk, but through a simple human gesture.
The IGP delivered a goodwill message and words of admonition to the couple. He subsequently stepped onto the dance floor to celebrate with them. He then invited senior officers present, including Omooba Adejobi, to join him in honouring the newlyweds.
And the IGP danced.
Not for a few seconds for the cameras.
He remained on the dance floor for more than 30 minutes and spent over two hours at the event, sharing in the joy of the couple, their families and members of the police community.
At that moment, another famous observation came to mind. Maya Angelou once said:
“People will never forget how you made them feel.”
That, for me, captures the deeper significance of this occasion.
The young officer may remember the IGP's policies and directives during his career. But he may also remember for the rest of his life that the Inspector-General of Police personally attended his wedding, spoke to him and his wife, danced with them and celebrated their happiness.
That is leadership expressed through humanity.
For those familiar with regimental organisations such as the Police and the Armed Forces, the personal presence of an Inspector-General of Police at the wedding of an Assistant Superintendent of Police is significant.
It sends a message that rank does not have to create an emotional distance between a leader and those he leads. It says: 'I see you. I value you. Your happiness matters. You are part of this family.'
And this brings me to the wisdom of another great thinker, Simon Sinek, who has written extensively about leadership and organisational culture:
Congratulations on your retirement my good brother, excellent cop who discharges his duties with all sense of responsibility, patriotism and professionalism, Murphy, former Commander SWAT, Ogun State. We met when I was the PPRO Ogun State, many years back. His Dad, who is a retired police officer, once told me, Oga, I have a boy in the police. I quietly asked him, who is your boy in the police? He said, Oga, I will ask him to meet you one day. And behold, a young looking, gallant and smart cop came to meet me in the office at Eleweran. Murphy Salami told me sir, my dad is the officer in Lafenwa, Abeokuta. He asked me to meet you. I embraced him warmly. Since then, Murphy has been a wonderful crime buster and excellent officer in the NPF, who shares the same ideology with me. With your retirement, i am sure the Ogun State Police Command, the entire state and many others in Ogun, will miss you a lot. You are still young though, not 60 years of age yet, but the length of service caught up with you. I wish I had an opportunity to retain you in service, I would have done it. What i can say now is to pray that God will protect you, and make a way where there is no way. Congratulations to you once again. We will always celebrate you and stand by you.

Strengthening border security in The Gambia
In a coordinated effort, officers from immigration, police, customs, prison authorities and the INTERPOL National Central Bureau were recently deployed to various locations near the capital.
Equipped with mobile devices allowing instant, frontline access to INTERPOL’s databases, officers checked identity documents, fingerprints and vehicles, looking to detect individuals involved in terrorism, drug or human trafficking.
More than 13,000 database queries were conducted during the two week operation, including 748 checks through the Biometric Hub.
74 stolen motor vehicles were identified.
The operation was held under Project Identity, which provides training, capacity building and technical support to Gambian authorities, facilitating wider use of INTERPOL tools to ensure global collaboration.

Masturbation and pornography are among the things destroying many people in the Church, including worshippers and pastors.
Many may not be committing fornication or adultery, but every day they are watching pornography and masturbating in secret.
Today, I pray for you: may God deliver us from the bondage of masturbation and pornography.
This is not something we should normalize. It can become a destructive habit that keeps people in shame, secrecy, and spiritual bondage.
May God give us the strength to break free, the grace to overcome temptation, and the courage to seek help when we need it.
May our minds, bodies, and hearts belong completely to God.
Lord, deliver us. 🙏
Thousands witnessed an extraordinary move of God as 4,000 Muslims publicly gave their lives to Jesus Christ, declaring Him as their Lord and Savior during a powerful gospel crusade.
In a world that often seems filled with darkness, this is a powerful reminder that the Gospel is still transforming lives. Hearts were changed, lives were surrendered, and the name of Jesus was lifted high before a massive crowd.
Every soul matters to God, and heaven rejoices over every person who comes to Christ. May these new believers be strengthened in their faith, rooted in God’s Word, and become bold witnesses for Jesus wherever He leads them.
“There is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” — Luke 15:10
🙏 Praise God for this incredible harvest. May many more come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Criminal networks are increasingly deceiving people with the promise of legitimate jobs, only to trap them in scam centres where they are forced to defraud others.
INTERPOL has been sounding the alarm about the rapid expansion of these scam centres, not only because of the financial harm they cause, but also because of their devastating human cost.
Not everyone working in a scam centre is a victim of human trafficking. But thousands are.
Many leave home believing they have secured their dream job, only to have their passports confiscated, be subjected to extortion, or face violence and intimidation. They are then forced to carry out fraud, cybercrime, money laundering and other criminal activities for the benefit of organized crime networks.
Once concentrated primarily in Southeast Asia, scam centres have now been identified across the Middle East, West Africa and Central America. The victims forced into criminality are being recruited from every region of the world.
On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, I congratulate @UNODC for continuing to shine a light on this growing threat. For @INTERPOL_HQ, it is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to dismantling these criminal networks, protecting victims and strengthening international cooperation to bring those responsible to justice.

PRESIDENT TINUBU APPROVES ADDITION OF FOUR NEW DIVISIONS FOR NIGERIAN ARMY AND RECRUITMENT OF 28,000 PERSONNEL TO STRENGTHEN SECURITY
President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army’s structure from eight to twelve divisions: the four new divisions are 5 Division Headquarters - Makurdi, Benue state; 9 Division Headquarters – Ilorin Kwara State; 10 Division Headquarters – Jalingo, Taraba state and 83 Division Headquarters – Benin, Edo State. This is a landmark move to enhance the country’s security architecture and improve the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.
A statement by Special Adviser to the President Bayo Onaguga says the approval underscores the President’s unwavering commitment to equipping the Armed Forces to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges effectively and to strengthen national defence capabilities further. This is a landmark move to enhance the country’s security architecture and improve the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.
It adds, the expansion builds on the Administration’s sustained investments in the Armed Forces, including approval for the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel, acquisition of critical military platforms and equipment, improvements in troop welfare, and ongoing support for operational readiness and force modernisation.
Under the new structure, the Nigerian Army will operate twelve divisions, strategically positioned across the country as follows:
1. 1 Division Headquarters – Kaduna (Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States)
2. 2 Division Headquarters – Ibadan (Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo States)
3. 3 Division Headquarters – Jos (Plateau, Bauchi and Gombe States)
4. 5 Division Headquarters – Makurdi (Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi States)
5. 6 Division Headquarters – Port Harcourt (Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States)
6. 7 Division Headquarters – Maiduguri (Borno and Yobe States)
7. 8 Division Headquarters – Sokoto (Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States)
8. 9 Division Headquarters – Ilorin (Kwara and Niger States)
9. 10 Division Headquarters – Jalingo (Taraba and Adamawa States)
10. 81 Division Headquarters – Lagos (Lagos and Ogun States)
11. 82 Division Headquarters – Enugu (Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi and Imo States)
12. 83 Division Headquarters – Benin City (Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States).
The establishment of the four new Divisions will significantly improve command and control, decentralise operational decision-making, strengthen border security, enhance the protection of critical national infrastructure, improve counter-insurgency and internal security operations, and ensure faster military response to emerging threats nationwide.
Implementation of the new force structure will be done in two phases. The first phase, covering the establishment of the 5, 9, and 10 Divisions and the reorganisation of existing formations, will be completed by September 2026. The second phase, involving the establishment of the 83 Division and further reorganisation, is expected to be completed by December 2026.
The statement further says President Tinubu commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, and all officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The President reaffirmed his Administration’s determination to continue investing in the Armed Forces, ensuring they remain adequately equipped, highly motivated, and fully capable of protecting the nation and guaranteeing the safety and security of all Nigerians.
