Stop acting like these guys owed you, or anyone else, their agitation. They put their necks on the line long before anyone else did. Those who later joined the protests or supported them online did so at their own risk because they believed in challenging an outdated system.

What really angers me is watching people who neither take responsibility nor lead from the front somehow hold @abhijeet_dipke, @SauravDassss, and @AshutoshRanka personally responsible for every single person who joined the protest or posted in support of it.

People stood up for their country, not for the CJP.

Dear Brave Students,

I write to you not merely in solidarity, but with gratitude. Every generation inherits the unfinished work of democracy. Yours has accepted both the burden and the privilege of carrying it forward.Albert Camus's Caligula tells the story of an emperor who comes to believe that because he possesses absolute power, he is answerable to no moral limits. Convinced that power alone can define justice, he imprisons himself within his own tyranny. He systematically dismantles every restraint on governance, believing that authority itself entitles him to do so. As I and Sandhya, my wife watched the deeply disturbing events unfold in Delhi, we were reminded of that enduring truth.

History has taught this lesson repeatedly. From Tsarist Russia to the student revolt of Paris in 1968, from the youth-led struggle against apartheid in South Africa, Tiananmen Square, to the Navnirman Andolan of 1974 in Gujarat attempts to suppress young voices have never extinguished the desire for freedom. Authority may command obedience for a while; it cannot indefinitely command the conscience of a generation.The images of the brutality inflicted upon you have filled us with anguish and anger. A society learns to question itself in its universities. To question those who hold power over your future is not a privilege you seek; it is a democratic responsibility you fulfil. When questions are answered with batons instead of reason, it is not the students who stand diminished. It is the State.
Reflecting on his years in a Siberian prison camp, Fyodor Dostoevsky observed that the civilization of a society is revealed by the way it treats those it imprisons. One might extend that thought today: the health of a democracy is equally revealed by the way it treats its students and citizens. On that count, our democracy failed. In unleashing force instead of dialogue, those in authority revealed not their strength, but their insecurity.If I was not there beside you physically, it was for two reasons. The first one I resent deeply: age has imposed boundaries on my body that my spirit refuses to accept. If I could not march beside you, it was never because my conscience hesitated. The second was a conscious choice. I did not want the attention to drift away from where it rightly belongs. This is your movement, your voice, your moment of moral courage. You do not need celebrity validation. Democratic movements derive their legitimacy from the courage of those at their centre, not from the visibility of those who stand beside them.

Please know that distance has never meant detachment. Sandhya and I shall continue to stand with you in every way available to us. Abhijit Dipke adapted on the fly when the protest grew to a size no one had anticipated, worked miracles with crazy logistics, held the dirty tricks dept cleverly at bay.

He's been tireless, relentless, immune to rumours. He and the CJP team created a big tent, and kept those massive crowds broadly peaceful.

I have caveats: didn't see any of the leaders at the barricades on the 21st when all hell broke loose, am wary about the AAP connection, and sceptical of Wangchuk's role. That said...

This July, this moment — it would not have happened without Mr Dipke's courage. I don't know if he's a perfect revolutionary, whatever that is, but he's one hell of a battlefield general.

Along with the hubris of the Modi govt, the other thing that got buried today was the Indian mainstream media. They couldn't figure out how to divide people. Some of the channels made one last ditch attempt by trying to bring in the issue of reservation. Neither their anti-national trope worked nor their pak-chinese agent trope worked. They couldn't bring in the Hindu-Muslim angle either.

The youth of India formed their own ways of communicating and informing each other, while completely cutting out the legacy media. Individuals with cameras reporting day in and day out from Jantar Mantar became the media ecosystem. There was little tolerance for 'godi media' and its antics.

However, this govt is petty and they will strike back. They will do everything in the next few days/weeks to ensure that the next time people have to express anger, it is infinitely more difficult. I have already seen scores of people complaining about how their harmless memes have been censored by Instagram. Expect a backlash in the coming days, and be ready for it.

The fight has just started, it will be a long one.

Hello @GitanjaliAngmo, do you and @Wangchuk66 own this movement that you feel that you can dictate how this movement should go forward? There were many other students who were also fasting at the same time, do you hear them talking in the same tone, as if they own the movement?

And what does it mean by don't politicise? Are political parties of this country not part of the democratic space of this country? @Wangchuk66 is quite happy to deal with BJP and their leaders, and break his fast in their presence. So, then which political parties are you talking about which shouldn't 'politicise'? Are you saying that the opposition parties should not participate in this moment?

And since when are ideologies not important? Did Gandhi not have an ideology? Did Nehru not have an ideology? Did Bhagat Singh not have an ideology? When BJP and its supporters are declaring the students who are protesting to be anti-national, is that not the output of an ideology? Are the textbooks that are being changed across the state not an output of an ideology? Are the RSS people who are being placed in every university and dictating how the universities should run not the output of an ideology? If you're saying that you care for the students, then you should also know that what the students are going through today is because of an ideology that has taken over the country.

In fact, the most central aspect of what is happening in India today, is a fight of ideologies.
