I feel that people who say things like 'stop making autism your entire personality' have fundamentally misunderstood what autism is.
Autism is my neurotype, folks, it's my brain, it literally impacts and shapes every single way that I experience and interact with the world.
Shout out to all of us who were told we were โincredibly smartโ growing up but we were confused bc we couldnโt tie our shoes or tell our left from our right until waaaaaay past our peers.
Society always tells neurodivergent people to try to understand & adapt to neuroconforming people, yet no one tells neuroconforming people to try to understand & adapt to neurodivergent people.
The autistic urge to doubt yourself the minute someone questions you, even when you have a wealth of knowledge and data is on your side, because youโre so used to being โwrongโ whenever a non-autistic person disagrees with you, regardless of who is actually, in fact, right.
Autistic people are often taken advantage of by others because:
- We can overlook red flags, wanting to give people the benefit of the doubt that we are rarely given.
- We often take things at face value, which means that we can miss hidden agendas.
