PCG Implements Kadiwa Operation in Bajo de Masinloc and Offers Assistance to CCG Following Maritime Incident

In response to the presence of around 35 Filipino fishing vessels in Bajo de Masinloc, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed the BRP Teresa Magbanua and BRP Suluan, along with MV Pamamalakaya, early this morning to carry out the “Kadiwa Para sa Bagong Bayaning Mangingisda (KBBM)” initiative.

During the operation, Philippine vessels and fishermen encountered hazardous maneuvers and blocking actions from other vessels in the vicinity. In particular, the MRRV 4406 was targeted with a water cannon, but the seamanship skills by PCG crew members allowed the vessel to successfully evade from getting hit.

In a related incident, a collision took place between China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel 3104 and People's Liberation Army Navy (PLA Navy) ship 164, approximately 10.5 nautical miles east of Bajo de Masinloc. The CCG 3104, which was chasing the BRP Suluan at high speed, performed a risky maneuver from the PCG vessel's starboard quarter, leading to the impact with the PLA Navy warship. This resulted in substantial damage to the CCG vessel's forecastle, rendering it unseaworthy.

Following the collision, the PCG immediately offered support, including assistance with man-overboard recovery and medical aid for any injured CCG crew members. Meanwhile, the MRRV 9701 safely escorted the Filipino fishermen to a secure location, where they are now being provided with essential fuel and supplies.

The Philippine Coast Guard reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding all maritime operations in the area and wishes for the swift recovery and proper treatment of any affected CCG personnel.

PCG Update on Atin Ito Convoy En Route to Pagasa as of 3 PM Today

As of 3 PM today, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reports the presence of two vessels from the China Coast Guard with bow numbers CCG 3306 and CCG 21549, which have been observed shadowing the Atin Ito convoy approximately 58 nautical miles off the coast of El Nido.

To safeguard the civilian vessel MV Kapitan Oca, carrying both Filipino and foreign civilians, the PCG Commandant, Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan has deployed its two vessels, BRP Melchora Aquino and BRP Malapascua.

In response to the unauthorized patrol by the China Coast Guard, the PCG vessels have initiated radio communications to challenge CCG 3306's claim of operating under the jurisdiction of the People’s Republic of China. BRP Melchora Aquino has asserted that this area lies within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Philippines, emphasizing that the China Coast Guard vessels lack legal authority over these waters, as outlined by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award.

At present, CCG 3306 is located 4 NM nautical miles from the Atin Ito vessel, while CCG 21549 is also positioned 4 NM nautical miles away.

The Philippine Coast Guard remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all civilians participating in the civil society-led musical concert on Pagasa Island.

China Coast Guard Vessels Collide with Philippine Coast Guard Vessels Due to Dangerous and Illegal Maneuvers

This morning, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessels BRP Bagacay (MRRV-4410) and BRP Cape Engaño (MRRV-4411) encountered unlawful and agressive maneuvers from Chinese Coast Guard vessels while en route to Patag and Lawak Islands in the West Philippine Sea. These dangerous manuevers resulted in collisions, causing structural damage to both PCG vessels.

At approximately 3:24 AM, while navigating about 23.01 nautical miles southeast of Escoda Shoal, BRP Cape Engaño was subjected to aggressive maneuvers by CCGV-3104. This resulted in a collision with the starboard beam of the vessel, creating a hole on the deck with an approximate diameter of 5 inches.

Shortly after, at 3:40 AM, BRP Bagacay approximately 21.3 nautical miles southeast of Escoda Shoal—was rammed twice on both her port and starboard sides by CCGV 21551, leading to minor structural damage.

Despite these incidents, both PCG vessels remain committed to and shall proceed with their mission of delivering essential supplies to personnel stationed on Patag and Lawak Islands. The PCG stands firm in its responsibility to ensure the safety and security of our maritime domain while addressing any threats to our national interests.

The National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea urges restraint and adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and other relevant international laws to prevent further escalations and ensure the safety of all vessels operating in the region.
