Puntland Will Never Opt for "Psychological Surrender" says Ex-Somali PM Sharmarke Amid Secession Warning

Former Somali Prime Minister @OmarSharmarke has reaffirmed Puntland's central role in shaping modern Somalia, declaring that its people will never choose "psychological surrender" despite mounting domestic pressure within the region to secede from the federal government.

Sharmarke, a native of Puntland who served two terms as Somalia's prime minister, was reacting to an official letter sent to the United Nations by Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni. In the letter, Deni warned the international body that the Puntland State is "currently facing pressures from huge masses of its citizens who are in favor of full independence from the Center."

Dismissing the idea of abandoning the state-building project that Puntland helped spearhead, Sharmarke highlighted the region's historic contributions to founding and sustaining Somalia's federal governance system.

“We made notable investments into the independence & the governance of this nation, thus psychological surrender will never be an option for the people of Puntland,” Sharmarke said. “Having said that, the important aspect out of these letters is to reach a timely agreement on the federal elections.” He added.
