#HouMinghao: “The emotional development between the two of them is really conveyed through very subtle, delicate shifts. From an acting perspective, I think that’s actually more challenging, because we don’t have any grand gestures or carefully designed moments to rely on. Most of it has to be expressed through tiny changes in our eyes and expressions.
Take today’s scene, for example, after #XiaoWuyi confesses his feelings. Xie Jiayu is still just a young girl, someone who’s always been cherished and protected. So even after confessing, Xiao Wuyi feels he has no right to pressure her into doing anything. He won’t even pressure her to give him an answer. Instead, he quietly watches her reaction. As for Xie Jiayu, she’s just a young girl who can’t bring herself to respond at that moment. Or rather, she doesn’t even know how to respond, because she has absolutely no experience when it comes to love.
I think that’s what people really enjoy, that push-and-pull. In reality, neither of them knows anything about being in love. But Xiao Wuyi gives Xie Jiayu all the respect she needs, while Xie Jiayu’s feelings are so subtle and understated that Xiao Wuyi can still sense them.
I think that’s really how #KeytothePhoenixHeart expresses so much of its emotions, through the tiny, nuanced details between two people. So when Xiao Wuyi realizes that Xie Jiayu is beginning to like him, even just a little, he secretly feels a quiet sense of satisfaction. I think emotions like these are actually more precious than the kind of passionate, all-consuming romance that burns like fire. It’s a pure, unclouded kind of love.”

it’s the type of acting you don’t need subtitles to understand and be moved to tears. heck—he didn’t even have a single line

Hou Minghao walking & posture is both "Dignified and upright Young Master" as China describes his walk and that's why he suits the Ancient Person aesthetic.
His straight consistent walking posture is so attractive.

A blogger with a 1.5M following took time to write something about #HouMinghao after watching his performance of #XiaoWuyi in #KeytothePhoenixHeart. See what he has to say.

“What surprised me most about Hou Minghao this time wasn’t simply how well he acted, it was that he ‘dared’ to act this way.
A lot of young actors today worry that audiences won’t understand what they’re trying to convey. So they add more scenes, more dialogue, more overt emotion. Hou Minghao chose the opposite approach. He trusted the audience. He trusted that you could read what his character was feeling through nothing more than a look with the eyes.
These days, many performances rely on dialogue to explain every emotion. If the character is happy, they smile. If they’re angry, they shout. If they’re heartbroken, they cry—as if they’re afraid viewers might miss it otherwise. Hou Minghao’s greatest strength, however, lies in what he doesn’t say.
His gaze appears calm on the surface, but beneath it is a constant undercurrent. The character’s restraint, inner conflict, and growing affection are all conveyed through the slightest hesitation in his eyes and the smallest shifts in expression. He never tells you, ‘I’m hurting.’ Instead, a single look makes you feel that he’s on the verge of breaking.
Great acting isn’t about who cries the hardest or yells the loudest. It’s about making the audience forget they’re watching someone perform. Song Weilong’s widely praised ‘physiological acting’—his trembling body, bloodshot eyes, and raw physical expression—is a powerful example of emotional release. Hou Minghao takes a different path. His performance is built on restraint. It’s the suffocating tension before emotions finally erupt, and that quiet suppression often draws viewers even deeper into the character’s experience.
Neither approach is inherently better than the other. But restrained acting is arguably the more difficult of the two. You have to hold every emotion back until it reaches a breaking point, allowing the audience to feel the anxiety and heartbreak on the character’s behalf. Push too hard, and it feels exaggerated. Hold back too much, and nothing lands. Finding that balance is incredibly delicate.
It’s time to stop defining actors by whether they’re considered ‘traffic stars.’ Hou Minghao’s performance is a reminder that acting isn’t built through trending topics or social media buzz. It’s built one glance, one pause, one measured breath at a time.”

Xie Jiayu: If I insist on staying... Can you please... take care of yourself a little more?
Xiao Wuyi: You are deliberately making things difficult for me
Xie Jiayu: I am purposely making it difficult for you

🥝: Xiao Hou, I prepared a lot of beautiful words to say to you before I came, but I completely forgot them. Do you know why?
Hou Minghao : Why?
🥝: Because none of them are as beautiful as you.
HMH : Come on, high five! That was so cheesy 🤣
