The forums will be down for maintenance today at 5pm EST (roughly four and a half hours from now). This is to allow us to move from the temporary hardware we were forced to use, to a more permeant setup. There will be no data loss and should take an hour or two.
The forum is up on a temporary home and currently re-indexing. Once that is finished the forums will be re-opeened. As it is a temporary home the site may be a little slow until we can get back to a permanent home.
@Jrdales2 To get the forums up today should take between 7 to 12 hours, in order to upload everything and ensure that things are working properly. The future downtime is unknown at this time, it's just something we know we'll need to do. Hopefully it should be less than a day.
Some good news! Temporary hardware has been acquired and barring further issues we should be back up within the next 12 hours. There will however be future downtime as we find a more permeant solution, since we don't want this happening again. Thanks to Xon for all his hard work!
Update: it looks like the SB server was in fact damaged, and they won't get us new hardware until they finish inspecting the server. Unfortunately this means additional time to restore.
We're still waiting on a solid ETA for when we'll be back up. It seems our servers will need to be inspected before they can be brought back online. We're looking at ways we might be able to get the forums up faster, but for now all we can do is wait for updates.
@TimEnglishTeach Based on the information we have we might lose the last 30 minutes of data before the servers went down. But our backups are secure and if we get some good news the data loss might be less than that.
We're still waiting to hear back from the provider if SB's server was damaged or not. Backups are constantly running, so worst case, backups are < 30 mins old.
A generator at the data center housing the SB server caught fire yesterday, activating the fire suppression system. The fire department ordered power to be cut. SB's server may have been water damaged and may need to be restored from backups. Updates to follow.
