The YAF is attacking more Saudi resupply ships in the Red Sea as well as targets on the islands of Hanish in the Bab al Mandab with ballistic missiles. Yemeni reports indicate that the archipelago has been transformed into closed military zones equipped with bases, radars and intelligence monitoring stations. Absolutely devastating images coming out of the Tibetan-Nepal border following the flash floods. I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever seen anything this terrifying. Hundreds of people have been killed and more than a thousand are missing. Algeria has also declared three days of public mourning following wildfires that have left at least 12 people dead and 54 injured. Nepal contributes around 0.05% to global carbon emissions, while Algeria’s contribution is tiny compared with the world’s largest emitters, yet both are among the countries bearing the devastating consequences of a climate crisis largely driven by wealthy capitalist nations.

Scientific projections indicate that extreme climate events are likely to increase in both frequency and intensity over the coming decades, even if a radical and immediate reduction in greenhouse gas emissions were achieved. According to the scenarios assessed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), completely halting emissions would not bring global warming and its impacts to an immediate halt, because the climate system continues to respond to the accumulated concentration of greenhouse gases and to the disturbances already imposed on the atmosphere and oceans. We have therefore already entered a range of climatic change that is unprecedented within the context of modern human experience, with global mean temperatures exceeding levels that were historically considered normal for human societies, while the precise future trajectories of warming and its regional impacts remain difficult to predict with complete certainty because of the immense complexity of the climate system and the interactions among its different components.

This becomes particularly significant when the current changes are placed within their geological context. The Earth has experienced successive natural cycles of warming and cooling throughout its history, but such transitions generally unfold over timescales ranging from thousands to hundreds of thousands, and sometimes millions, of years. Contemporary warming, by contrast, has occurred at an exceptionally rapid rate over a period of only a few centuries, and particularly since the Industrial Revolution and during the past several decades. This makes it fundamentally different from many previous natural climate changes in terms of the speed at which it is occurring and the scale of human influence driving it.

The present challenge lies in the rapid transformation of the climate system and the associated increase in the risks of extreme heatwaves, intense precipitation and flooding, droughts, wildfires, sea-level rise, and other climate extremes. The scale and severity of these impacts, however, will remain strongly dependent on future emissions pathways and on the capacity of societies to adapt to the changes already underway.
