Today, on Nelson Mandela Day, may we celebrate the life and legacy of this wonderful man. May we follow his example when it comes to human rights and forgiveness. Here I am, with my mother, meeting Nelson Mandela, many years ago when we traveled to South Africa for @specialolympics. He spoke of the power of the individual, the power of acceptance, the power of forgiveness, and the power of compassion. I fondly look back on these lessons from him, and hope we can all carry these truths forward. I hope in his honor and his spirit, we can all treat each other with compassion, respect, acceptance, and forgiveness, today and every day. That we can work towards a more loving and understanding society. #NelsonMandelaDay

Today is #LovingDay, a celebration commemorating the day the Supreme Court struck down state bans against interracial marriage. It's named for the monumental case, #LovingvVirginia, and the interracial couple at its center, Richard and Mildred Loving. When they married in June of 1958, interracial marriage was banned in the state of Virginia where they lived due to the Racial Integrity Act of 1924. Although they were able to marry in a different state, they were arrested in Virginia for living together. Their case eventually went all the way to the Supreme Court, where it was decided unanimously in the Lovings' favor on June 12, 1967.
