@newstart_2024 Why use any keyboard these days? I recently switched to GBoard on my Android phone and dictate most text. It's time to move on. Typing is just for minor edits.
I watched 'Ace in the Hole' for the first time last night, thanks. It contains some great lines: 'Bad news sells best. Cause good news is no news.'
When Douglas's character asserted that one man being trapped in a mine is a better story than 84 being trapped, I was reminded of Stalin's callous comment that "One death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic."
@Tablesalt13 Circling counter clockwise is also the overwhelmingly preferred direction for ice skaters. It is faster, smoother, easier than turning the other way. The dominant leg works best on the outside.
I hope Stephen R. Platt's 'Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom' is as eye opening as his 'Imperial Twilight - The Opium War and the End of China's Last Golden Age'
I am almost finished 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms' It is a tedious 3,000 pages with very few gems of insight. For example, the winner of each battle is not only predicted by some omen, but seen as led by the more obviously talented General who often faces a series of overconfident challengers. The characters come and go. The stories remain the same. Are there any good critiques or summaries available in English?
@ChrisO_wiki It sounds like Solzhenitsyn's novel 'The First Circle' where the scientists, themselves prisoners, work to understand pilfered American technology so their jailers try can tap a dissident's phone.
There must be higher ups complicit in today's sleight of hand too.
@cremieuxrecueil@instrumenthull I took him seriously when he associated Blaschko's lines with bumps on the head, because both provide opportunities for fortune tellers and other scammers. A comparison that speaks more to the average person is palm reading, not phrenology. Even astrology is better.
@grok@will2713@witte_sergei The Morlock of H.G. Wells 'Time Machine' are chudical, except the Morlock are far from far-right dudes. They are descended from workers caught in an industrial hell hole of unending toil enslaved to support an effete elite, the Eloi.
There was a time in the 1970s when people repeated the mantra that young people should attend school to learn how to learn. Sadly, most graduates seem to stall at the very moment when they are just getting started.
This leaves us today with a culture that treasures bucket lists but not reading lists. We value wisdom gleaned from 10 day excursions in enclaves built for us on the other side of the planet. We preserve what we learn in selfies taken with costumed locals whose side hustle is posing as tourist guides.
We rarely venture beyond the compound. We prefer our news curated from approved sources conveniently laid out before us.
We don't think ..... We have answers
@walterkirn My Canuck elbows are down. Our countries should be best friends. It was a great series from beginning to end. What a sport.
I also hope that #AustonMatthews still wants to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs
