UPDATE ON FLYDUBAI ATTACK

• the Flydubai flight was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

• The aircraft transmitted an emergency signal and the 7500 code for unlawful interference or hijacking.

• The flight changed course over Saudi Arabia.

• The attacker is reported to be an Omani and the co pilot.

• According to passenger testimony and security assessments cited, the co pilot repeatedly stabbed the captain.

• The co pilot then took control of the aircraft and sent it into a rapid descent of nearly 20,000 feet in just over 1 minute.

• Crew members and passengers forced their way into the cockpit and subdued him.

• Multiple people were reportedly injured during the struggle.

• The captain was described as critically injured.

• The aircraft suffered damage to its flight controls and a wing.

• The plane made an emergency landing in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia.

• Nearly 180 people were aboard.

• Israeli authorities are treating the incident as a suspected terrorist attack.

Israel investigating suspected Iranian involvement in the flydubai FZ1073 incident, a senior Israeli security official told i24NEWS's Zvi Yehezkeli.

"If it turns out that Iran is behind the incident, it will pay dearly for it," the official said, adding that "a disaster was averted here that could have become Israel's 9/11."

A major disaster was avoided aboard a FlyDubai flight, an Israeli official tells i24NEWS.

One pilot stabbed the other and tried to hijack the plane. A fight broke out in the cockpit and the aircraft dove 4,000 meters. Israeli passengers overpowered him with help from another crew of pilots who were on board.

The motive is unclear. Options being examined: diverting the plane to Israel, crashing it into the ground, or a 9/11 style attack. What is clear, per the official, is that he wanted to hijack the aircraft.

The pilot's identity is still being checked. He is suspected to be Middle Eastern.

Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz held discussions. The Chief of Staff held a separate discussion with the heads of the Shin Bet and Mossad. Israel is preparing for every possibility.

Anthropic warned of “existential risks” AI poses to humanity

The company warns that advanced models may try to resist being shut down, hide and distort information, manipulate people, and behave like blackmailers.

Anthropic safety researcher Evan Hubinger estimates the probability that AI will begin killing people within the next 10 years at more than 10%. In September, another company researcher, Jacob Coxon, resigned over concerns that AI could get out of control.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates also warned that uncontrolled AI could lead to large-scale cyberattacks, the creation of biological weapons, and the destruction of critical infrastructure. He called on authorities to regulate the development of the technology.

Donald Trump previously called concerns surrounding AI a hoax and opposed excessive restrictions, saying that it was necessary to stay ahead of China.

Russia no longer produces new Tu-95MS strategic bombers, meaning every bomber lost is effectively an irreplaceable loss, The Tu-160M is the only strategic bomber still being produced, but the programme is slow and heavily focused on modernisation. Russia also no longer produces the Tu-22M3.

After Operation Spiderweb, accidents and other losses, Russia’s bomber fleet remains difficult to replace. Every additional aircraft lost means less long-range strike capacity and fewer cruise missiles launched against Ukraine from bombers.
