Shark island is formed through a combination of erosion of sand from Cape Lookout, tides, and the currents flowing around the tip of Cape Lookout. This means that Hurricanes are particularly impactful on islands like shark island, as these shots from after Matthew in 2018 show
Here’s a little update to some of this Hurricane Dorian impacting the NC Coast last fall. These pics were taken on “Shark Island”-an oversized sand bar off the tip of Cape Lookout. This “island” is ever shifting & actually disappeared for a while after Matthew.

Shark Island is not small. At low tide the entire sandbar is over a mile long & approximately a quarter mile wide, but even at the highest tide parts of the island are visible. This tidal pattern has made Shark Island one of the best places to find shells on the east coast.
