If Tagle is elected Pope, I think it will be through this victory path towards 89 votes. He will start with 14 votes from these core loyalists—cardinals who share his theology, pastoral priorities, and alignment with Francis’s vision.

(4) Tagle has been reported as a frontrunner—and this might work against him. There’s a saying in Rome: Chi entra papa in conclave, ne esce cardinale (“Whoever enters a conclave as pope, leaves it as a cardinal”).

But: also equally possible that Cardinals might not elect Tagle as pope. (1) The conservative pushback is real, emboldened by the power of the far right in America and Europe. If Tagle is viewed as THE successor to Francis, conservatives will consolidate against him.

(3) The more progressive of the cardinals might be disappointed with his alleged inaction on clergy sexual abuse or other issues and might prefer a true outsider wildcard who can really shake things up.

(2) Tagle’s youth and relative inexperience compared to might be enough to sway votes in favor of more seasoned veterans in the Vatican who have more gravitas, like Parolin, Sarah, or Erdo.

(4) Lastly, while Tagle is a successor to Francis in many ways, he is also something that Francis was not: a theologian. For fence-sitting cardinals with a slight conservative bent, this might be enough to win them over.

Why I think cardinals might elect Filipino cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as the new pope: (1) he’s global, popular, and pastoral—qualities that the Catholic Church could use to its advantage—if it chooses to.

(3) Tagle has the skills and experience needed by a modern leader in a world whose center of gravity is shifting away from West. He is young, multilingual, media-savvy, and from the global South.
