Let me say one thing clearly before anything else. Women should study. There is no debate in my heart about that. An educated woman is a woman with choices, and choices are her right.

So when people ask why fewer children are being born in India today, I do not blame women. I want to be honest about where the real weight of this sits.

Yes, the cost of living has risen. To raise a child well now you need money, good healthcare, schooling, security. All of this is real, and it presses on every young couple.

But underneath the economics there is something older.
For hundreds of years, maybe longer, our society dominated and suppressed women. We took them for granted.
That suppression did not simply vanish. It settled into the muscle memory of generations.

And what is held down for too long comes back, in our time, as friction. Some call it ego. I would call it the natural recoil of people who were kept small for too long.

Think of the man who earns while his wife does not, and who says, “I feed you, so you will listen to me.”
He does not see her as his partner. He sees her as someone who owes him obedience.
That is the wound.
And a woman who has felt it, or watched her mother feel it, will naturally want to stand on her own feet so no one can ever speak to her that way again. Who can blame her?

@IRCTCofficial is so unprofessional. Diverted train for 3 hours without any prior intimation. Having so much difficulty in train 12014 with a small kid. Trains are meant to be convinience for commuters but Indian railways ensure to make it inconvenient. Passenger management system needs to be relooked @RailMinIndia

I’ve told this story before - my grandmother sent me to the home of a dear friend, who had become a widow in her 70s. No kids, she and her husband had a fabulous time pursuing career, hobbies, travel. Then as their friends died off they got more and more isolated. When her husband died, she had no one but a caretaker to make her meals.

A nephew was going to help her with her finances and she was terrified that he was taking advantage of her. I went to the house to meet the guy and the woman.

I’ve never seen a sadder scene. She was sitting alone in the corner of a beautiful room, in a beautiful house, surrounded by all the things they accumulated. She took me through the house to show me all of their stuff. Her artwork. His writings and his office, still left as it was the day he died.

And she had no one. I am sure she would have given anything to have children and grandchildren to fill her life up.

We have a hard time thinking long term. We need to think long term much more often.

This news will go largely unreported. Non-Western lives matter little unless they can be used as fodder for performative and narrow political agendas, as was the case with Gaza. Humanitarian assistance from certain countries is downplayed because acknowledgment would reveal the lack humanity that characterizes the behavior of most global actors.
