UPDATE | We now have a much clearer picture of what happened in Iraq overnight.

Iraq’s Federal Commission of Integrity has confirmed that judicial arrest warrants are being executed against individuals accused of misappropriating public funds.

The Commission says the operation is being conducted strictly under Iraqi law and is the result of coordination between the judicial, executive and legislative authorities.

Iraqi state media, citing senior sources, now reports the arrest of MPs Mohammed al-Karbouli and Alia Nassif on corruption charges.

This is important: al-Karbouli is a Sunni politician, while Nassif is a prominent Shiite MP. The confirmed names therefore do not support the initial theory of a crackdown directed exclusively against the Sunni opposition.

The overnight raids appear to be part of the broader anti-corruption campaign ordered by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, following judicial warrants and investigations that expanded after the detention of former Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili.

We should still remain cautious about the much longer lists circulating online. The operation is confirmed, as are some arrests, but the complete list of detainees has not yet been officially released.

We detain them to assess their mental health & presentation etc• I have noticed an increase in men brought into our care by police from migrant hotels, or locally housed migrants. All Middle Eastern. All filled with pure hate. I watch them spend their days practicing what myself & security class as military combat moves, they pretend to shoot unseen targets, they run and charge at walls and make tactical stabbing/slashing motions (Head, throat, chest area). They chant Allah Akbar. Some threaten to rape me and make gross sexual advances while I attempt to care and give medication. Some have said “wait and see what’s coming”. “You’re all going to die” statements all said with hate or a malicious laugh • I strongly believe we are housing hundreds of thousands of Islamic soldiers. I am scared and these men scare me. I don’t know what we are going to do. I pray for change 🙏🏻

UPDATE-- Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin just dropped the hammer on the entire Minneapolis/St. Paul refugee program after admitting the corruption was so deep and so widespread that they literally can’t keep track of who’s who.

He said it straight: “There’s been so much corruption that we honestly can’t keep track of who’s who… And that’s how they designed it.”

Now every single person with refugee status in that area has to either reapply in person or voluntarily self-deport. No more games. No more loopholes. No more importing problems and calling it compassion.And the best part? Mullin said this is going to be the model for the rest of the country.

China has removed six senior military officers from its top legislative body in a sign that president Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption drive is intensifying.

The standing committee of the National People’s Congress announced in a late-night note that 13 members had been removed and one had resigned.

Besides the military officers, they include former financial regulator Li Yunze and former Xinjiang Communist Party chief Ma Xingrui, according to Xinhua news agency.

The FBI spent 12 months trying to crack one banker's hard drive.

They failed.

The software on that drive is free.

It is on GitHub right now.

It is called VeraCrypt.

July 2008. Brazilian police raid the apartment of banker Daniel Dantas in Rio. They seize 5 hard drives.

The Brazilian National Institute of Criminology spends 5 months running dictionary attacks. Nothing.

They send the drives to the FBI in early 2009.

The FBI runs attacks for 12 more months. Nothing.

April 2010. The FBI ships the drives back to Brazil. Still encrypted.

The software was TrueCrypt. Free. Open source.

May 28 2014. The TrueCrypt developers shut the project down under conditions nobody understood. The site posted a warning that said TrueCrypt was not secure. Nobody could explain why.

A French cryptographer named Mounir Idrassi had already been improving the code at his Paris company IDRIX. On June 22, 2013, exactly 17 days after the first Snowden revelations, he released VeraCrypt.

10,053 stars. Written in C. Pushed yesterday.

In 2016 the Open Source Technology Improvement Fund paid QuarkSlab to audit every line. They found bugs. Idrassi patched them in v1.19.

Here is what VeraCrypt does that most full-disk encryption does not.

It has no company behind it that holds your key.

It has no cloud escrow option that a court order can unlock.

You can encrypt a single file, a folder, a USB stick, or your entire operating system drive. You can also build a hidden volume inside another volume, so that if someone forces a password out of you, they see a decoy. The real data stays invisible.

The math is the only lock.

Free. Open source. Audited.

The encryption tool the FBI could not break in 12 months is the one your laptop should be running.
