@AfricanRenais11 Ditto on honorary Dr. Shouldn’t be used. Ever. However, I’d say social capital around “Prof” isn’t generated solely by the media, but even the academic institutions themselves. Pierre Bourdieu talks about this extensively in The State Nobility.
@AfricanRenais11 Head girl. Coincidentally, I was one of those too. However, I haven’t suggested the ROLE persists. Just that title “Prof” can and does in the public imagination.
@AfricanRenais11 My point is the title persists socially. Many retain their titles. Broadcasters, newspapers, and the public almost always still refer to Professor Richard Dawkins as such, despite not actively teaching. As with Orofessor Mary Beard and Professor Robert Winston. Plenty in Zim too.
@AfricanRenais11@1changamire In Zimbabwe as in the UK, a teacher at a university is a lecturer. ‘Professor’ is awarded to senior scholars with substantial achievements in research, teaching, leadership, and publications.
@matigary G’s public persona was quite likeable. He stunted with humor, and from a distance you sensed he was ultimately harmless. What makes Dhafu so offensive is the daily contempt for those with lesser means, while the performative altruism is transparently tied to a singular agenda.
Banksy’s anonymity was a part of his art.
How sad that Reuters spent time and resources trying to derail someone (who has contributed massively to society)’s career instead of investigating something worthwhile like, I don’t know, widespread political corruption or the Epstein Files. 🤡
