Happy to be on Twitter as I start this journey online. I have a lot to say from what I have learned being the father of a special needs child. My hopes are to help others avoid the mistakes I made, and be better prepared as they take on a very special responsibility.
As a Parent of a child who has extreme self-injurious behaviors, I see the parents side of this in #StopTheShock . I believe them when they say its a last resort, and the story of the child with a retina problem hits home so hard. But SIBs are a form of communication
I pray for everyone, the kids and the parents, who I do believe love their children and are trying to do the best for their safety. But minds need to be opened here big time IMO and the kids problems need to be served in a new way.
There are reasons #ActuallyAutistic people have trouble communicating with us so-called "neurotypical" people. They are speaking out on social media because its a way they can. We need to listen to them.
Working through the #specialneeds system is part of the fight. But every time I take a step forward I feel like I'm not stepping on solid ground. Something gives way that makes the move forward unstable in a different way.
I know I've been quiet for a while, longer than I wanted. Things are real tough right now. Prayers needed. Thankfully we have some champions who are awesome, but answers are not clear. Just want to get back to being able to tweet about stuff that even feels slightly normal.
I love watching how technology (like the iPad) is really growing leaps and bounds in support of those with special needs. My son uses it in #SLP and it's really providing benefit
Getting ready for the holidays. As a #speicalneeds parent, the logistics are far more challening, with someone always have to be 1:1 with my special boy. But I know how much it means to him to spend time with them, and that is what makes me thankful heading into Thanksgiving
Looking out the window is typically something my son does regularly, tho I have to say when he looked out at the falling snow yesterday I really didn't blame him. It was nice joining him in the activity. #autism
For all of the hits, the bites, the scratches, there is still a smile that melts my heart. I won't give up on the good side of him even if his regulation, his inability to communicate, and frustrations from that result in anger that he can only express one way #autismawareness
Trying to coordinate wrap around services seems like a full-time job sometimes. Then again, a lot of his teams feel that way. But that's the mission I take on. I won't stand by passively and outsource - both physically and mentally - key areas of my son's growth #autism
