England has over 3,000 lost medieval villages.

Entire communities once stood where fields and sheep now lie.

Some were abandoned after the Black Death in the 14th century. Others were cleared to make way for profitable sheep farming during the late medieval period.

Today, their remains still survive across the English countryside.

Sunken lanes. Crumbling church towers. Raised earthworks beneath the grass.

One of the most famous is Wharram Percy in North Yorkshire.

For centuries it was a thriving farming village. By the early 1500s, it had largely vanished.

Archaeologists have uncovered:

• house foundations.
• roads.
• ponds.
• even evidence of medieval meals and daily life.

Many lost villages are still visible from the air.

At sunrise or sunset, ancient field patterns and abandoned streets sometimes emerge beneath the light and shadow of the land itself.

England’s countryside is not empty wilderness.

It is a landscape shaped by generations, layered with forgotten lives and stories.
