In class, I asked “Was the US right to drop nuclear bombs on Japan?” A chorus of Americans said “no,” but one international student said, “yes,” and made a solid case about saving Chinese lives by ending the war early.

After class, he stayed to chat. I told him I appreciated his taking the opposite position from the others.

He shook his head, and said, in heavily accented English,
“Crazy New York liberals.”
