Western media had no credibility left in the eyes of keen observers of their machinations, but this war seems poised to take away whatever remained of their image. It is unclear what the aim of this recycled story is at this point, but it is riddled with laughable assertions.

From an outside observer's perspective, the core assumption is somewhat plausible: Ahmadinejad could be sold to both hardliners and anti-status quo factions, as he combines both roles, a hardliner in his own right and a rebel against Khamenei.

However, much of the report does not add up.

The story claims he evaded IRGC scrutiny to meet Mossad's Barnea. While the IRGC has had counterintelligence (CI) failures, this seems hard to believe.

Ahmadinejad's fallout with the Supreme Leader happened as an ideological ally where he tried to overpower Supreme Leader while staying within the system like late Rafasanjani. This made him a more serious threat than reformists like Khatami or Rouhani. This gives every reason for him to be under strict surveillance.

Even more dramatic is the claim that he was rescued from his apartment and then allowed to leave a Mossad safe house after becoming "disillusioned" with Israeli plans. It would have been more convenient if the NYT cited a “close aide” of his to explain disillusionment. As a seasoned politician, was he unaware of US and Israeli reliability, or their methods and aftermath of "bringing democracy"?

The report also asserts he became disillusioned with the system after his nomination papers were rejected. Ahmadinejad's fallout happened earlier, while he was president, and it was much clear and severe. Rejection of papers hardly constitutes a conclusive sign of fallout with the ruling establishment. Ali Larijani's papers were rejected twice, in 2021 and 2024.
