Welcome to the #speirsquad page! We are an ecosystem ecology and stream biogeochemistry research group at the University of Arkansas.
Here in the Speir Lab, we aim to understand the influence of humans and climate change on nutrient cycling in streams and rivers.
🌊 Registration is OPEN! Join us for the first Basin Breakthrough seminar ft. early career water quality leaders from the Upper MS River Basin!
📅 Monday, October 6 | 12-1 PM CT via Zoom

Tiny plastic particles pose potential health threats. Read more about how a team including a @bumperscollege and @AginArk researcher investigated what's keeping these microplastics in our streams at https://t.co/m8erA6O08P. @speirsquad#EarthDay
Salt is essential to keeping our roads and walkways safe when it snows. But when salt is washed off the roads, how does it impact nearby microorganisms? Read about a recent @AginArk study on it at https://t.co/wc2Cc1ifRh. @bumperscollege @ecospeir@speirsquad
How does beet brine and road salt impact roadside microorganisms that decompose leaf litter? Read about a recent @AginArk study at https://t.co/wc2Cc1ifRh @bumperscollege @ecospeir@speirsquad
The crew was out at #LakeConway scouting for a new project on the impacts of reservoir draining on water quality.
We will conduct sediment core experiments to assess the risk of nutrient loss during storms that occur while the lake is dry & when the lake is re-wet in ~4 years.
3 new folks have joined the #SpeirSquad in the last few months:
Karessa De La Paz - MS Student working on high-frequency sensors & wetting/drying impacts on nutrient loss
Sophie Sward & Auldyn Faulk - #wundergrad lab technicians
We are thrilled to have them join the crew!
New from the #SpeirSquad! We left ag behind to disentangle long-term changes in N loss from a large river in #Greenland. We documented decreasing NO3/DON export over an 18yr period!

Had a great morning visiting UARK!
Got to meet @Howell_UofA_BAE and retrieve an old award. Excited to see @UarkBENG grow over the next few years!
Also, got to visit the @speirsquad lab -- Shannon and company are absolutely killing it!
The #SpeirSquad's first MS student passed her thesis proposal defense today! Congrats Caroline - one step closer to being a stream master!

IT'S OFFICIAL! The #SpeirSquad is recruiting a master's student for Fall 2024 🥳 The selected student will join the QuEST project team and focus on #WaterQuality sensor data for their thesis.
Email @ecospeir with the info noted in the ad ASAP to inquire! @sfs_src@BenthosNews
A huge congrats to our THREE class of 2023 graduates: Deo, Lilly, and Ire. 🎓🎉
We are so proud of all they have accomplished in the lab! 👏 We will miss them!

The #SpeirSquad knows how to ring in the new water year!
We had a potluck celebration to kick off the 2024 water year ft. pasta, cowboy caviar, guac, pies, cobbler, brownies, etc.
The new water year also marks the start of #QuEST sampling & Caroline's urban stream project!
