Packed room for our Lunch & Learn at the HCP Fall Hospital Supply Chain Conference yesterday. Thank you to every supply chain leader who gave us an hour of their time.
We walked through how SpendRule turns contracts and invoices into structured data, validates every invoice line against the contract before payment, and puts Category Enforcement Agents to work disputing exceptions with vendors, evidence included. No API integration into your ERP or AP system. No changes to the systems you already run. Your team gets time back for sourcing and negotiating while SpendRule plays defense on the price.
The question we heard most: “How do we see this on our own contracts?” Simple. Test it with your own documents and see what’s hiding in your data.
Great to have Adrian Cunningham, TriHealth; Anthony Meldrum, Vanderbilt; Christina Good, M Health Fairview; Christopher Scribner, Crouse Hospital; Christy Truair, Clara Maass Medical Center; Elizabeth Sanchez, UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook; Georgia Cochrane, Fairview Health Services; Gregory Goddard, Mercy Hospital Springfield; Jeremy Johnson, Centralus Health; Joshua Owen, UT Southwestern Medical Center; Kerry Collum, Vitruvian Health; Kimberly Hazlett, Akron Children's Hospital; Laurie Pate, St. Luke's Health System; Marisa Del Carpio, UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale; Nicholas Flatt, Saint Francis Health System; Rosa Costanzo, Jackson Health System; Sean Hazlett, Mason Health; Tom White, Froedtert ThedaCare Health; and Wayne Redwine, Magnolia Regional Health Center in the room.
Put your agreements to work.

A strong start to the HCP Fall Hospital Supply Chain Conference.
A tier discount that should have applied. A rebate that never made it onto the invoice. A value-add buried deep in a 300-page agreement. Contract pricing is rarely a single number, and it only protects margin if someone applies the rule to every invoice.
At Booth 1409, the SpendRule team showed how we do that: capturing complex pricing from the contract, applying the documented rule to the invoice, and showing the inputs so your team can see exactly how each number was reached.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by.
Chris Heckler, Joseph Akintolayo, Daniel MacKinnon, and Jenn Mobbs are on-site through the conference. If purchased services spend, contracts, or invoice validation is on your team’s radar, find us and let’s talk.

Two matching amounts are a clue.
Before calling them a duplicate, check whether they cover the same obligation. An installment, replacement invoice or reversal can change the answer.
Trace the obligation before counting a recovery.

Where To Find Us
📍 Product Showcase: Monday, October 12 | 11:30 AM – 4:00 PM | Booth 1409
Stop by Booth 1409 during our Product Showcase to see it firsthand: how SpendRule turns contract terms into rules that validate every invoice line before payment goes out, not after.
📍 Sponsored Lunch & Learn: Tuesday, October 13 | 12:15 PM – 1:15 PM | Ballroom D
Join us at Ballroom D for lunch and real discussions about what prevention actually looks like in purchased services spend management.
Purchased services contracts are negotiated with real discipline and too often enforced with none. If that's a challenge on your radar, let's connect in Vegas!

Behind every great product is a team that shows up for the work, and for each other.
Last week, the SpendRule team stepped away from the day-to-day to spend time together, and it was a great reminder that our biggest strength has always been our people.
Around this table: Chris Heckler, Donald Cramer, Jenn Mobbs, Naveen Ganadi, Krishna Kankipati, Jerry Zeng, Joseph Akintolayo, & Daniel MacKinnon.
Helping health systems close the gap between what's negotiated and what's actually paid takes focus, persistence, and people who care about getting it right. It also takes time to sit together, laugh, and remember why we do this.
Grateful for this team, and for everything we're building together.

Last week in Phoenix, one question came up in nearly every conversation at the Fall IDN Summit: not “do we have a purchased services problem?” but “how much is it costing us that we can’t see?”
That gap is the story of purchased services. Nearly half of non-labor spend in health systems runs through this category, and most of it moves without the structured controls applied to supplies. No item master. No standardized pricing. No automated check against the contract before the invoice gets paid.
We built SpendRule because visibility alone doesn’t stop an overpayment. Enforcement does.
If that question sounds familiar, let’s talk: https://t.co/e7S0EqdBe6
Every dollar overpaid on a purchased services invoice is a dollar that was meant for care.
It does not feel that way in the moment. The invoice clears, the payment goes out, the books balance. But that money had a job, and overpaying a vendor was not it.
That is why prevention beats recovery. Validating the invoice against the contract before payment keeps the dollar where it belongs, instead of chasing it back a year later.
When the savings cost nothing in care, the only question is why wait.

Every capital request gets evaluated against a cost of action. What does this initiative cost, and what is the return? None get evaluated with equal rigor against the cost of inaction, which is what it costs to keep doing exactly what you are doing today.
That's why purchased services leakage survives budget season after budget season. A $250,000 capital request gets scrutinized by committee. A $250,000 annual leakage rate spread across 40,000 invoices gets none.
Our newest blog post breaks down the math CFOs can use to price inaction:
Purchased services overpayments run 3% to 8% of spend. Recovery audits claw back roughly 0.1% of total spend, and recovered dollars take an average of 26 months to come home. Manual AP teams capture only 20% to 30% of available early-payment discounts, while automated processing captures above 80%.
At a 1.7% operating margin, every dollar of prevented leakage is worth roughly $59 in new net revenue. That makes prepayment controls a revenue decision, not a back-office expense.
The most expensive thing a finance organization can do is wait.

We're proud to welcome Beth Graefe, EdD to SpendRule's Advisory Board.
Beth has spent more than 20 years leading health system transformation, directing 100+ margin improvement initiatives nationwide. She has served as chief performance officer for a hospital consortium and COO of an academic medical center-led joint venture, with deep expertise in physician engagement, supply chain transformation, and technology-enabled performance improvement.
In her words: "What excites me most about SpendRule is its ability to apply an AI-driven platform to one of healthcare's most persistent problems: ensuring hospitals pay only what they actually negotiated."
Purchased services represents roughly $360 billion in annual healthcare spending, and most invoices are never validated against contract terms before payment. Beth's operator perspective will sharpen how SpendRule turns contract intelligence into decisions health system leaders can act on.

Welcome, Beth. We're glad to have you in our corner.

When margins tighten, the first conversations are usually about what to cut. They rarely start with what is being overpaid.
Staffing, services, and programs go under the knife while overpayments on purchased services invoices keep clearing, approved and unchecked.
For a health system with $500M in annual indirect spend, validating invoices before payment can return $15M to $40M+ a year.
Increase your margin without cutting care with SpendRule.
