I don’t think people are putting enough emphasis on the disturbing part of this France–Niger matter.

France secured long-term contracts with Niger from the 1970s that kept uranium prices well below market rates, around €0.80 per kg, while global prices fluctuated much higher and sometimes exceeded €100 per kg.

They were essentially getting the uranium for next to nothing. All the while, they never thought to help Niger build even a single nuclear reactor.
