Can listening to music improve our wellbeing? Why does sad music lift our mood? Can classical music make us smarter? 🤔

Remembering the great Miles Davis who was born on this day in 1926. One of the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music, Davis was outstanding among trumpet soloists, he led many small ensembles, including three that were the original sources of major jazz idioms: cool jazz, modal jazz, and fusion.
Rather than emulate the busy, wailing style of such bebop pioneers as Gillespie, Davis explored the trumpet’s middle register, experimenting with harmonies and rhythms and varying the phrasing of his improvisations. He played a crucial and inevitably controversial role in every major development in jazz since the mid-‘40s, and no other jazz musician has had so profound an effect on rock.
Here, he is performing with Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Chick Corea on organ, Dave Holland on bass and Jack Dejohnette on drums live in France, 1969.
Classical music has a remarkable way of expressing emotion. It can move us deeply, but it can also bring a sense of calm and stillness. In this video, I share two of my favourite pieces — gentle, soothing works that may help your children settle and drift peacefully to sleep.
