HR forced me to hire a junior systems administrator last week.
He's 23 years old and showed up on day 1 carrying a physical notebook.
He spent his first morning looking at our backend and realized my automation scripts were written in 2008.
He asked me why we're running deprecated code that relies on an unpatched version of Windows 7.
I told him we employ a strategy of chronological obfuscation.
I explained that modern malware is designed to attack modern architecture.
By keeping our infrastructure trapped in the Bush administration, we're immune to zero-day exploits.
You can't hack what you can't interface with.
He looked at me like I was insane and asked about data compliance.
I leaned back in my chair and whispered the phrase "asynchronous legacy tunneling".
He immediately closed his notebook and apologized for questioning my vision.
I spent the rest of the afternoon watching a 4-hour documentary about the Roman Empire at my desk.
Next week I'm going to make him untangle category 5 cables for character development.
Introducing Pool
That little icon got us $2M in funding, 15M organic views, and now you can all finally discover what's behind it.
Pool is "just an app for your screenshots." But it holds a few bets we decided to build a whole company on.
We believe the context of the future is your camera roll. Understanding someone's taste, the texture of their life, can unlock things we can't even comprehend yet.
We believe the future of interfaces will feel the way games make us feel, computing as a beautiful mix of art and technology.
Now live on the App Store.

āI qualified pole and then I got disqualified for a wing that was 0.02mm out or something crazy like that. [..] I remember in that moment for me, my heart just sunk. Because I knew I had to win every race and I remember in that moment I thought it was over, I canāt win this world championship.ā
āSomehow I was able to move on, weāre going to get there, thereās nothing you can do about the past, you move forwards, we can do this. [..] I came back the next day and won from last to first.ā ā¤ļø

Thereās nothing like London during the holidays. It was great to meet with Slow Horses star, Jack Lowden, to tell him how excited we are for season 5 on Apple TV+!
Vamos, @RafaelNadal!
Ā
As you get ready to graduate from tennis, Iāve got a few things to share before I maybe get emotional.
Ā
Letās start with the obvious: you beat meāa lot. More than I managed to beat you. You challenged me in ways no one else could. On clay, it felt like I was stepping into your backyard, and you made me work harder than I ever thought I could just to hold my ground. You made me reimagine my gameāeven going so far as to change the size of my racquet head, hoping for any edge.
Ā
Iām not a very superstitious person, but you took it to the next level. Your whole process. All those rituals. Assembling your water bottles like toy soldiers in formation, fixing your hair, adjusting your underwear... All of it with the highest intensity. Secretly, I kind of loved the whole thing. Because it was so uniqueāit was so you.
Ā
And you know what, Rafa, you made me enjoy the game even more.Ā
Ā
OK, maybe not at first. After the 2004 Australian Open, I achieved the #1 ranking for the first time. I thought I was on top of the world. And I wasāuntil two months later, when you walked on the court in Miami in your red sleeveless shirt, showing off those biceps, and you beat me convincingly. All that buzz Iād been hearing about youāabout this amazing young player from Mallorca, a generational talent, probably going to win a major somedayāit wasnāt just hype.
Ā
We were both at the start of our journey and itās one we ended up taking together. Twenty years later, Rafa, I have to say: What an incredible run youāve had. Including 14 French Opensāhistoric! You made Spain proud... you made the whole tennis world proud.
Ā
I keep thinking about the memories weāve shared. Promoting the sport together. Playing that match on half-grass, half-clay. Breaking the all-time attendance record by playing in front of more than 50,000 fans in Cape Town, South Africa. Always cracking each other up. Wearing each other out on the court and then, sometimes, almost literally having to hold each other up during trophy ceremonies.
Ā
Iām still grateful you invited me to Mallorca to help launch the Rafa Nadal Academy in 2016. Actually, I kind of invited myself. I knew you were too polite to insist on me being there, but I didnāt want to miss it. You have always been a role model for kids around the world, and Mirka and I are so glad that our children have all trained at your academies. They had a blast and learned so muchālike thousands of other young players. Although I always worried my kids would come home playing tennis as lefties.
Ā
And then there was Londonāthe Laver Cup in 2022. My final match. It meant everything to me that you were there by my sideānot as my rival but as my doubles partner. Sharing the court with you that night, and sharing those tears, will forever be one of the most special moments of my career.
Ā
Rafa, I know youāre focused on the last stretch of your epic career. We will talk when itās done. For now, I just want to congratulate your family and team, who all played a massive role in your success. And I want you to know that your old friend is always cheering for you, and will be cheering just as loud for everything you do next.
Ā
Rafa that!
Ā
Best always, your fan, āØ
Roger
