@shitpost_game What’s up with fanboying over winrar. 7zip does everything winrar does, but faster and better, is completely free and portable, and integrated into context menus. Why would anyone use winrar?
Why can’t Muslims just say: “yeah, that was actually pretty shitty, I don’t agree with it.”
Instead they try to justify that marrying children is ok and adults having sex with minors isn’t rape.
I think the fear monger Ing around ai is mostly overdone. We basically need some additional breakthroughs that we haven’t hit yet in order to experience the chaos many gloomer boomers evangelize about. AI will be disruptive, but superhuman intelligence that fundamentally destroys our societies feels very unlikely.
I use multiple LLMs and transformers in my daily work. It is a game changer. But it feels more like a mirror reflecting the best of humanity back at itself. Ai will let us make connections that we couldn’t before based on domain mastery but I see no evidence of it make new breakthrough type discoveries. Think of it like this. As our knowledge base has grown substantially, many breakthroughs arise out of individuals or teams that have expertise in multiple knowledge domains. Sometimes we have knowledge domains where if someone just connected the dots and thought deeply, they would make a discovery and advance our knowledge base. These types of gains are interdisciplinary synergy gains. They are new, but the are incrementally built on existing knowledge. Let’s call them “type a” progress.
It’s progress, but it’s not the same kind of leap forward that people like Einstein, Dirac, etc brought with them where they had great knowledge, threw it out and thought with novelty and connected it back to existing knowledge bases. Let’s call this “type b” progress.
I see plenty of evidence of ai being able to achieve type a progress but no evidence of AI being able to do type b.
AI is trained on insane amounts of data. The best data is fundamentally created by humans. These ais are codifying that knowledge and then recalling. It’s the difference between a mirror that is becoming increasingly clear and reflective versus a master painter doing a portrait. They both reflect a scene, but does anyone look at the mirror with wonder? No. There’s no novelty in the mirror. The mirror is still a useful and vital tool. But it lacks the ability to ascend to portraiture. That’s AI. Once there is real evidence of them making quality type b discoveries, I’ll change my mind. But the path we are on doesn’t see to go there.
For clarity I’m not saying that ai won’t have the wold. It will change it massively. But humans aren’t going to be outright replaced. Instead I see a future where we work alongside the machines for a very long time. It’ll be a wild ride but we aren’t jumping forward to Star Trek levels of post scarcity society or black mirror levels of dystopia. We are just going to get a regular, boring dystopian utopian doldrum.
Candidly I don’t know why this is surprising to anyone. This is how the entire system works in every town at every level. I’ve made a lot of donations in my life in order to save my business and employees from destitution. Sometimes it’s not even access. It’s shakedowns. They will sit you down and tell you what they need and if you don’t do it the will destroy you. Awesome system.
Buying a Tesla right now. CPO. Trade in process is a giant disaster. Bait and switch pricing. Asking for piecemeal information every few days then saying if you don’t provide in 48 hours we will cancel your order and eat the deposit. I’m a cash buyer with a trade-in and this has been a disgraceful process. Wtf Tesla.
@OccupyLibraries@libsoftiktok Public service announcement. You can get bidets that install in almost any toilet in minutes for way under $100. Game changer. Go buy one now. You will never go back.
