(SURRY COUNTY, N.C.) -A Mount Airy couple has been sentenced in connection with the 2023 death of their 4-year-old adopted son, Skyler Wilson.

Joseph Paul Wilson and Jodi Ann Wilson pleaded guilty today, July 8, to second-degree murder and felony child abuse, according to court records.

Each received a sentence of 25 to 31 years for the murder charge, with credit for the 1,272 days about three and a half years they have already spent in custody. The child abuse conviction adds an additional 7 years to 9 years and 5 months, bringing their total sentences to approximately 29 to 37 years in prison.

Charges were filed in January 2023, days after Skyler died from a hypoxic brain injury caused by prolonged oxygen deprivation, according to the medical examiner's autopsy report. Less than a month before his death, a former foster parent had reported concerns about his treatment to officials.

The Surry County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The SBI's Northwestern District led the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Skyler’s death.
