@B_Strawbridge I was going to move but I still love all the wildlife, gardening etc information I find on here. Still finding new like minded people to follow too.
Good news: A record 52,019 puffins were counted on Skomer Island this spring, off the coast of Wales. Last year's record was 43,626. The year before, 42,513.
Puffins are globally listed as vulnerable, and most colonies elsewhere are crashing. Mass seabird die-offs hit southern European beaches earlier this year. But Skomer keeps going the other way.
The reasons aren't a mystery. The island has no rats and no foxes (the two predators that wipe out ground-nesting seabirds almost everywhere they're introduced). The surrounding waters still have enough small fish to feed chicks.
The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales has been counting every bird every spring for decades, which is the only reason anyone knows the colony is bucking the trend.
The Skomer puffin story is what real conservation usually looks like. Boring, repetitive, decades-long, and dependent on a small group of people who give a shit walking the same patch of land every year with binoculars.
@jenny93076468 Do you recycle fishing gear anywhere specific? Apologies if I have asked before. I have some in a bag in my car that I picked off a beach in Skye and I don't know what to do with it!
British pollinators. What a workforce ! Without this amazing team there would be no gardens or food for that matter. We must do our best to look after them, teach our kids they are friends and build habitats to show them how loved they really are.
Kenneth Grahame didn't live to see the E.H. Shepard illustrations for 'The Wind in the Willows' published. But prior to his death, Shepard showed him a few sketches, prompting Grahame to remark, "I'm glad you made them real." 🥹

I want to ask you a favour today - if you live in the UK would you please sign this?
It's called a 'petition' and even though I don't understand what it is, I know it's important.
Maybe you could tell other humans about it and ask them to sign it too.
I'll tell you more about the special August thing tomorrow.
Here's the petition -

@CarlBovisNature What an amazing photo. Mum's in Fife back a couple of weeks ago. Just been up to my allotment tonight (Lanarkshire) and heard them before I saw three. Such a wonderful bird to see.
@SheffCouncil why you spraying Sheffield streets with pesticides? Im HORRIFIED to see GLYPHOSATE sprayed on our streets by a Council worker. Cities across UK and Europe have banned it. It kills wildlife, is a health risk, cats and dogs can get very sick BAN IT NOW! @_OliviaBlake
