We at NCAN knew it’d be crucial at our annual conference to discuss next steps after the Supreme Court’s June ruling that struck down race-conscious college admissions practices. https://t.co/0gjdsFJmKk
New #webinar: Join us for this 75 minute special session as we lean into the SCOTUS ruling & the Department of Education's guidance on race-based college admissions. Learn more & register: https://t.co/7knR3PvIjV
Exactly! Admissions is not “a zero sum game.” For every 1 student accepted, maybe 9 are rejected. So if a wh!te student gets rejected from a highly selective school, odds are it wasn’t a POC applicant that “took your spot.” #AffirmativeAction
This is gonna take EVERYONE. And I do mean EVERYONE. Don’t just leave this to CBOs and the local high school college counselor. We’ve ALL got to pitch in and fix this. /8 #SCOTUS#AffirmativeAction#HBCUs
But it’s incredibly unfair to ask these literally overworked and underpaid institutions (3% remember?) to come in fix America’s racism in higher ed problem. A partner in the fight, 1 tool in the toolbox? Sure /7 #AffirmativeAction#SCOTUS
I know we mean well when we say “prepare for the rush,” hello, we’ve seen it already. #HBCUs have been/still are a somewhat safe haven from the micro aggressions/general stress of being a POC here. HBCUs do more w/less every day. They are a✨PHENOMENAL✨ postsec choice /6 #SCOTUS
Remember why HBCUs were founded initially: to educate newly freed African Americans. These institutions went on to be the ONLY places that would educate the majority of AAs and Blacks across the diaspora because more selective schools ✨wouldn’t accept us✨ /5 #AffirmativeAction
HBCUs are grossly underfunded by federal and state governments. Tennessee State ALONE is owed half a BILLION dollars of unpaid state funding since the 70s; FAMU sued the state as well /3
#HBCUs make up THREE percent of America’s higher education system. They do NOT suddenly have the infrastructure to support a sudden or even gradual influx of students. It’s about way more than dorms. /2 #SCOTUS#AffirmativeAction
So late in sharing this but here’s my article on helping pregnant & parenting students persist to and through school!
Did you know that on average, student parents have higher GPAs than their childless counterparts? #StudentParents#ParentingStudentRights#SupportStudentParents
Did you know about 4 million (22%) US undergraduates are raising children while attending a postsecondary education program? Check out our latest article on several ways to support pregnant and parenting students' needs.
