Happening now! Evaluating the impact of overdose prevention centers in the United States: methodological challenges in the context of structural racism and federal prohibition #SER2024@epiresearch
@epiresearch Dr. Panagiotoglou presents results from a study Evaluating the effects of supervised consumption sites on housing prices in Montreal, Canada using interrupted time series and hedonic price models
@epiresearch Dr. Allen speaks to the importance of considering structural racism and racially targeted drug policing in evaluation of arrests surrounding OPCs in NYC. Findings suggest no increases in drug related arrests.
@epiresearch Dr. Allen considers these challenges while examining the impact of opening of the NYC overdose prevention centers on drug-related arrests in the surrounding neighborhoods
@epiresearch@Magda_Cerda Second evaluation: Community Stakeholder Survey. Will survey ~1,400 buildings within 0.75 mile walking radius of the OPC. Field staff will go door to door to implement survey.
@epiresearch@Magda_Cerda One evaluation plan: Systematic Social Observation (SS0). SSO will begin 6 weeks before OPC opens and continue for 12 weeks after. They are interested in 4 key domains: drug related litter, police and surveillance, public drug use, and outcomes related to built environment
Study question: What is the impact of OPC use on people's health? The team has recruited ~500 participants for a prospective cohort study from both NYC and Rhode Island in order to answer this question. Data collection is ongoing.
