Persona 4 uses homophobia as a joke and expects players to laugh along. Yosuke's treatment of Kanji never changes, and he never addresses it or apologizes. The game doesn't frame it as a flaw because, in 2008, it wasn't widely seen as one. It's not unreasonable to tone it down.
