@craig1black Basically, it was a cost saving measure. Two sizes of motherboards, one base design. Some of these boards also had a silkscreened design based on the codename, sometimes hidden. Other times, in plain view. We still did it on HPE boards until the day I left!

@craig1black I worked at HPE in Houston (same engineering group from the Compaq days). This angle squeezed all the components of a full ATX board into a micro ATX while still having clearance for a full AGP card. An expander could be use for the full size systems without another board design.
