Reminder that all opinions I post are my own, that I am not a paid staff member for the city, and that this is my personal Twitter account.
Unless explicitly stated, none of my posts are the opinion of the AAC, but of me personally.
Police are not social workers. They don't prevent crime. But recently, by-law officers have been ticketing homeless Torontonians $260 for "loitering in a park without a purpose."
This city needs to have a frank conversation about the role and responsibilities of police.
I hope @CamGuthrie and others who push to criminalize homelessness in Guelph look outside during storms like this and imagine what it would be like to live in a tent.
Those are the people you’re forcing into dangerous areas away from support services and life saving resources.
Hey folks! Does anyone have leads on somewhere that designs leg prosthetics in Guelph or nearby? We have a community member who is an amputee and *urgently* needs a new prosthetic limb, and I am not sure exactly where to start to help getting her one.
Thanks!
@CamGuthrie@DowntownGuelph You’ve selected feedback from some people to share here, but there was also a lot of feedback from people who found it more difficult to access downtown businesses and didn’t like this patio project.
Unhoused or low-income folks and people who use substances are always going to exist, and they are always going to do it downtown no matter where you build shelter.
So give them somewhere safe to gather and share community. Build it anywhere else and it will just be ineffective
I support a daytime shelter space or hub. 100%.
However, I believe our downtown cores/main streets should be purposeful places for thriving commerce, entrepreneurial small to medium sized businesses that often risk it all to provide employment with tourism & event opportunities.
@CamGuthrie This is the opposite of how to achieve what you want.
Unhoused and low income people and folks who use substances are ALWAYS going to congregate downtown, you either give them an indoor space to exist in or they’re going to exist out in the open.
It’s their city too.
Our downtown is for people who live in Guelph, period. Our low income healthcare, religious institutions, education and social services plus their patrons have every right to be there too. Downtown is for community, not just capitalism. The core is not just for the wealthy.
@CamGuthrie Pedestrian-only areas mean that people like me can’t access them. The AAC communicated this many times.
Which days and times do you think are appropriate to ban disabled people from downtown, exactly?
Cold weather alert! The front lobby of Guelph’s City Hall will be open past normal hours on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings this week (Jan 20-22, 2025) from 4:30pm to 8:30am. For more resources in Guelph, visit https://t.co/QaLZvvqJSS
If this year has taught me anything so far it’s that you’re never too old to show up at your parents’ house late at night and sit in their kitchen crying while your mom makes you a grilled cheese sandwich.
Kate was an absolute wonder. It's nothing short of horrifying that we lost this amazing human, who didn't just talk about love, she LIVED love. She WAS love. Her work will continue through her community care initiative Your Downtown Guelph Friends. Donate: https://t.co/kiT6m8xVrA
If you’re wondering how to make a contribution to Your Downtown Guelph Friends in memory of Kate, this GoFundMe goes directly to the YDGF budget. 💔 https://t.co/1IgSK5hbL2
This is by far the hardest thing I’ve ever had to post, and the reason I have been away from social media recently. Thanks to the other admins at YDGF who helped craft this announcement, and to Kate’s family for trusting us with writing it.
