I’m Supporting This Petition. Our Children Deserve Safe, Informed Care
Recently, The family of Natalie Gurney’s world was turned upside down when a member of their family was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. What hit me hardest was her telling me just how many childcare professionals and educators have no formal training to recognise the warning signs.
Type 1 diabetes is life threatening and affects around 1 in 500 children in the UK. Symptoms are for too often easily missed, yet early recognition is crucial to prevent DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis), which can be fatal if left untreated.
This petition, created by Natalie, calls for mandatory diabetes awareness training for all childcare professionals and educators. That means the people looking after our children every day would be equipped to spot the signs quickly and act fast.
For me, this sits right alongside the educational aims of Lyla’s Law:
• Educate the people on the front line with children
• Standardise awareness, so a child’s safety isn’t a postcode lottery
• Prevent avoidable tragedy through simple, life saving knowledge
No parent should lose a child or come close to it because the adults around them didn’t know what to look for.
Please take a moment to sign and share this important petition: https://t.co/XCxmatpWzd
Every signature is a step towards safer schools, nurseries and clubs for our children.

Dear @itvcorrie, have you learned nothing from two months ago?
I’m sure this clip was meant to be light‑hearted, but it reinforces harmful stigma around type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
You cannot get diabetes from a one-off Easter egg gorge!
This kind of messaging matters, and getting it wrong causes real harm.
It’s time for Kate Brooks @itv to sit down with @BT1DUK & @DiabetesUK and address the ongoing misinformation.
