That’s the distinction. Communism requires the state to suppress competing economic systems if it’s to be fully implemented. Capitalism doesn’t. Under capitalism, you’re free to start a commune, a cooperative, or any other voluntary collective. The reverse isn’t generally true.
Just a reminder that the US constitution does not establish capitalism as an economic system. Constitutionally, the people of the US are free to advocate for, and try to build, any economic system they like.
