'busy watching its own Funeral Pyre' Enoch Powell.
Enoch Powellβs "Rivers of Blood" speech on April 20, 1968, famously described Britain as "busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre". He argued that high immigration rates and a lack of integration meant the nation was witnessing its own destruction. This phrase was part of an inflammatory address against Commonwealth immigration and the proposed Race Relations Bill.
Context: Delivered to Conservative activists in Birmingham, the speech warned that the "natural and rational" response to rising immigration was to reduce its dimensions.
The Metaphor: Powell likened allowing large-scale immigration to "watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre. What's your opinion.
