The Loretto Staircase defies almost all the rules of architecture and physics.

Built in the Loretto Chapel in 1873, the original architect died before he could complete the chancel—without a way to reach it. Local carpenters were asked to solve the problem and admitted they couldn't.

The Sisters of Loretto prayed a novena to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters, for nine days. On the last day, an elderly man arrived with a donkey, worked alone in complete secrecy, using no nails, screws, or glue, and disappeared without payment.

The staircase is a self-supporting double helix, held together solely by its geometry.

A U.S. Marine laboratory identified the wood as Picea spruce, but it doesn't match any known species cataloged by science. No local timber was purchased. Even physicists say that the double-helix design is the key to its impossible strength.

There are 33 steps, a number associated with Christ, the Templars, and Freemasonry.
