Choosing medicine in India is pretty brave, so brave that it’s almost stupid.

Back-breaking number of years are spent in doing the most rigorous work. What’s the drive?

It’s not money.

It’s the status, respect and sense of fulfilment. No amount of money would drive an Engineer to put in 36 hours of continuous work in a hick-town hospital.

But nobody in the extended family would reach out to the Engineer with folded hands at 2am in the night asking why Amma is not able to breathe properly.

Doctors are treated as God’s incarnations, given they are not stealing kidneys. There are some bad apples. But that’s true with every discipline. Ask the civil engineers.

Even if you compare the 99th percentile of both disciplines, it’s stark.

Doctors barely have a liquidity event, like an Engineer working in Nvidia, No ESOPs, no sudden wealth, they have a steady accumulation. No 28 yr old doctor would be seen driving a Porsche. But high chances of a 45 yr old driving a Merc. The 99th percentile would be finishing their shift in Chandigarh, and not at Bellagio in Gurgaon.

It’s the sense of fulfilment. Saving a life is an amazing feeling, when the relatives look at you the gratitude in their eyes, elevates you 2ft above the ground. Divine. And they send you mangoes every season.

It’s almost stupid, but it’s this intangible benefit, this purpose, that’s saving our life at 4 am in the night. Kudos!
