people used to write assembly code by hand. then we built compilers

compilers would write assembly for you given an abstract higher level description of the program

but those low level programming languages were still too unforgiving for many use cases. too close to the hardware. So we came up with interpreters and just in time compilation that could take a loose higher level description — sometimes without explicit types — and turn it intro instructions in a lower level programming language like C

now we’ve reached such heights of abstraction that you can literally define a program or change in *english* and we have models that can convert that into code, call a compiler or interpreter, and ultimately turn english into assembly and machine code on its own.

I don’t think it’s going to stop there either. Computers of the future will probably tap directly into our brain waves and our guts to see how we feel and make changes quicker than we can even begin to form words and use language
