The painfully real neurodivergent experience of saying “I can’t keep doing this” and hearing “but you’re doing soo well.”
Yes. You’re watching the performance. I’m living the recovery.
AUTISM:
I have my workout routine.
Same days. Same exercises. Same order.
Please don't mess with the plan.
ADHD:
I was going to work out.
But now a walk sounds better. Or dancing. Or cycling. Actually, anything except what | planned.
AuDHD:
I wanted to work out.
Then I wanted to go for a walk. But the gym was too crowded. And going somewhere new felt exhausting. So I decided to exercise at home. Except home was a mess. So obviously I had to clean first. Then I got distracted. Then I ran out of energy.
Now I'm sitting here. Feeling guilty about the workout. The cleaning and approximately 47 other things.
ALL I WANTED WAS TO BE HEALTHY. Apparently, that requires project manager, a motivational speaker, and an exorcist.
What people don't realise is that being ADHD and Autistic means everything is WORK.
Eating? Work.
Showering? Work.
Drinking water? Work.
Hygiene? Work.
All the basic shit is work.
”i’m so adhd lmao!!!” WERE OR ARE YOU ALWAYS ON TOP OF YOUR SCHOOLWORK? DO YOU CONSISTENTLY TAKE SHOWERS? DO YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH TWICE A DAY WITH ANY REAL CONSISTENCY? ARE YOU ABLE TO FOCUS ON A PASSION PROJECT FOR AN ENTIRE MONTH BEFORE SOMETHING MORE NOVEL ENCOMPASSES YOUR ENTIRE BEING?
THEN NO, YOU ARE NOT, “SO ADHD.” IN FACT, YOU MAY NOT EVEN POSSIBLY HAVE ADHD.
Gilmore Girls is such a sweet and sympathetic show about two of the most selfish, awful women just having kinda shallow transactional relationships with everyone around them. The grandparents were treated horribly.
The best part of Gilmore Girls is how Lorelai was like, “Can I have $50k a year for my daughter’s school?” and Emily was like, “Fine, but you have to let me buy her a car too, and we’re having dinner together once a week.” And Lorelai was like, “Ugh, Mom, you’re the WORST.”
My favorite ADHD trait is genuinely believing, with my whole chest, that tomorrow I’m going to clean my entire apartment.
Every single night.
And somehow tomorrow keeps refusing to become the day.
