While the deaths of the Indian sailors after American naval action are undeniably tragic, a larger and uncomfortable question remains - what exactly were these foreign-flagged vessels doing there?

Two of the ships had already been sanctioned by the US for being part of the so-called “shadow fleet” moving Iranian oil.

The tragedy should not obscure the reality that the masters and the Captains of these ships were fully aware of the risks they were taking.

Crew on board, mostly Indians because we have large numbers of such workers, became victims because most of the sailors on board get there either knowingly to earn extra or through unscrupulous agents who trick them.

Importantly, no Indian-flagged vessel has been targeted. Indian ships continue to transit the region under arrangements and protocols issued by both the US and Iran, irrespective of the illegality of it.

The distinction between Indian ships and foreign-flagged vessels operating in the sanctions grey zone is important.
