Shift Up’s CEO has opened up about how close Stellar Blade came to never being finished.
During development, the studio was running out of money and at one point, Shift Up had enough cash to pay its employees for just three more months.
The company approached investors and major publishers, but many turned the game down because they thought it was too risky and wouldn’t recoup its costs. Some suggested Shift Up drop Stellar Blade and work on another project instead.
“There was a time when the company was in a situation where we could only pay salaries for about three months.”
CEO Hyung-Tae Kim admitted he sometimes questioned whether making a game like Stellar Blade in South Korea was the right choice.
The team kept pushing forward, an early demo impressed former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, helping Shift Up secure a publishing deal with Sony.
Stellar Blade became a success, and Kim says players deserve much of the credit.
He also admitted the studio will make mistakes but wants to keep improving and give something back to its fans.
