NETFLIX AND THE AFROBEATS DOCUMENTARY.
After months and months of waiting and speculations, I feel sad today to announce that my documentary “Afrobeats The Backstory”, (the first documentary ever on the now global music genre) and the upcoming sequel “Afrobeats 2: The Origins” will NOT be renewed and premiered on Netflix respectively. The reason being the global streaming platform has decided not to renew most African titles, cancel multiple shows and “first look” arrangements, the latter which specifically applies to me.
I am not the only one affected by this. We’ve all heard the rumours about Netflix “pulling out” of Nigeria over the last year or so. Personally, I believe Netflix came to Nigeria blindly and fell for the Nollywood song and dance, putting out stupid money on a selected few because of the hype and eventually felt they got hustled, but that is a story for another day, maybe a documentary in the future.
Myself and my Distributor are now working on securing a licensing deal with other streamers, also planning a World Premiere for Afrobeats 2: The Origins in August, and I promise you this is going to be the best documentary from Nigeria. I recorded for over 20yrs and had to dig deep into my archives to bring you the real story of Afrobeats.
Of course I am disappointed by Netflix’s decision, but like they say, we move! The Nigerian film space is experiencing a renaissance as I see the works of some of the brilliant new filmmakers coming up. The future of Nigerian film is bright, with or without Netflix. Just like Fela said “But sha, I still dey. And there shall be no compromise”.
Afrobeats The Backstory is still showing on Netflix worldwide until June 28th, 2025.
