There is no contradiction between improving the standards of our existing schools and sponsoring qualified students to earn degrees abroad and gain a broader experience of the world, including understanding local problems and solutions for addressing them.

What's even more ironic is that most of the critics of this overseas education sponsorship scheme are from privileged classes who have had opportunities that the beneficiaries never had. But there's no part of this country that requires mass education abroad as much as the North of Nigeria.

For too long, Northern Nigeria has existed as a closed society, primarily because of this inadequacy of exposure and this reluctance to mingle and adopt alien or modern thoughts, ideas, and concepts. We are underestimating the ripple effects of reshaping the minds of our people through cultural exchanges, international exposure, and education.

Those who've experienced the liberating impact of studying in a foreign space and institution, studying their practices and readiness for the future, know very well the price of such a privilege. It's one thing you don't want to deny anyone, especially in a region with a vast demographic still unwilling to patronise or prioritise Western education, a region that needs such role models to see there are rewards for not shunning the classrooms.

There are several online news outlets in Northern Nigeria today, thanks to the Internet. However, we largely don't support them. We, instead, constantly complain about the lack of media coverage. Nothing can be more ironic.

I can’t speak on behalf of BBC Hausa as I do not work for them. However, it is worth noting that BBC Hausa provides extensive coverage of the conflicts in Northern Nigeria, more than any other Hausa-speaking foreign media. For justifiable reasons, they don’t have reporters on the ground in some restive regions. They still maintain a vast network of connections in almost every nook and cranny of Nigeria.

If you listen to their programs daily, you will agree that they report about the Zamfara abductions, among other similar cases and crises, as much as possible. I once asked (and wrote about) how journalists deal with trauma for constantly reporting misfortunes such as insecurity in Northern Nigeria. At a time, I suspended listening to the news from this region.

Folks, let's stop peddling conspiracies. BBC Hausa has nothing to gain if they refuse to report incidents (and accidents) happening in Zamfara. You can blame them for doing something else but not reporting these conflicts.

Who instigated the ongoing baseless accusations they don't report about FUGUS students? The whole framing is baffling. It's as if their 'failure' to report the case holds the abductees in captivity! Come on!

Let's grow up. Let's apportion blame where blame is due.
