@UNSWArts @artdesignunsw@UNSW @samUNSW @UNSWLibrary@MediaFuturesHub Shout out to the former Director of Indigenous Programs at UNSWA&D, Tess Allas, for introducing the art world to the important work of Esme Timbery and who was an important influence on the creators of this work. Let’s NOT keep writing Indigenous women out of their histories.
Last issue of Extra Extra newspaper ran my story about #StandWithTess -catch this unusual art/#journalism closing tmrw at NSW Art Gallery. Like many alumni @UNSW, I cannot understand this decision. Despite the nice words, it smacks of institutional #racism@IndigenousXLtd
Congratulations to Nikita Holcombe, Carmen Glynn-Braun and Dennis Golding of Re-Right Collective for securing a residency at @artspacesydney in 2020 🥳. Tess’ legacy lives on and the art world will long benefit from her work. Sorry @artdesignunsw , you can’t erase Tess that easy!
Let’s carry the spirit of Tess on our campus and amplify it, calling out the hypocrisy, lies and colonialism. Let’s be the voice that Ross Harley thinks he can erase by sacking Tess. Contact us if you want to be a part of this ongoing movement. #standwithtess
For all those who have found refugee in this room, this is what Tess’ office looks like now. Shame on you @artdesignunsw , you are breaking so many hearts. This is what the aftermath of unforgivable institutional violence looks like.
After 230 year, you’d think they’d know better. For those of you upset and angry, look after yourselves but also we are still fighting and will continue to fight, so let’s be upset and angry together.
Great to see @UNSW practicing what they preach in their expectations of staff... 😵🤮This document must be a joke because it’s utter BS. So glad we pay president and VC Ian Jacobs $1.2million to approve these lies without any accountability 🤑🤙🏽. #standwithtess@artdesignunsw
Come along to the finnisage this Sunday (15/12/2019) at 2pm to get your hands on a hard copy of the article ✨ #standwithtess@artdesignunsw @UNSWPVCI @UNSW
EXTRA! EXTRA! The incomparable @Wendy_Bacon recently wrote an article about @standwithtess1 for the Extra Extra project at @ArtGalleryofNSW ✊🏽🙌🏽😍. This is currently being beautifully printed by the @TheRizzeria but is available to read here 👉🏽: https://t.co/kqcHSuhLKZ 👀
We are at #AARE2019 until just after lunch time today. We have to get our remaining stock back to the studio to do a pre-Christmas stock-take & re-print. Thank you all for your incredible support. You can find us on all the socials & our website https://t.co/Eu5IbsfMHM.
@SaraNAhmed Thank you so much for visiting Australia - the problems are so deep and so bad -please feel free to contact us <standwithtess @gmail.com> if you would like some data about severe institutional colonial violence happening now at UNSW
@DrSRP1 @UNSWPVCI @UNSW So good, right! Would be so great if @UNSW, @UNSWPVCI and @artdesignunsw would start by acknowledging Tess Allas - an amazing cultural leader and artist who has been at unsw for 14 years - by not sacking her!
@UNSWPVCI @UNSW Thanks to the Pro Vice Chancellor, Indigenous @UNSWPVCI for reading, at the launch of this amazing building, Tess’ words ripped directly from the bio Tess wrote and published in 2007 on the Design & Art Australia Online website, without acknowledging Tess.
@UNSWPVCI @UNSW Agreed! How lucky are we at @artdesignunsw to have Tess Allas who brought Esme not only into @UNSW community but was the first curator to bring her to art world attention in 1998 and continues to work with her on projects today. #CultureAndCountry
@UNSWPVCI @artdesignunsw @mdavisqlder @UNSW@CrippsKyllie@UNSWLaw Before it was a @UNSWPVCI policy, Tess was already ‘growing her own’ when she agitated for Fabri’s employment at Art & Design. Glad we’ll have at least ONE Indigenous staffer left at our faculty after Tess’s contract finishes on NYE and will not be reinstated. #GrowOurOwn
@UNSWPVCI @UNSW @UNSWArts @darth_synot Thanks to the Pro Vice Chancellor, Indigenous @UNSWPVCI for reading, at the launch of this amazing building, Tess’ words ripped directly from the bio Tess wrote and published in 2007 on the Design & Art Australia Online website, without acknowledging Tess.
@UNSWPVCI @UNSW @UNSWArts @darth_synot And let us not forget how lucky @UNSW is to have Tess Allas who brought Esme not only into UNSW community but was the first curator to bring her to art world attention in 1998 and continues to work with her on projects today.
Latest update: UNSW said they will “try” to hire Indigenous people for new Indigenous roles, but “there just aren’t many Indigenous people” with the skills they’re after so if the position remains unfilled they just may be forced to go with a non-Indigenous person.
4. Gatekeeping Indigenous people out of a colonial institution through all these various infrastructural means, then blaming your low applicant rates on Indigenous people lack of skill is institutional racism.
